i sense impending DRAMAAAAH so, let me just say that with silence i'm not trying to claim that i invented skull illusions. Jesus lol. There are lots out there, this is just my take on it. And no i did not use another existing illusion as reference.
So whoever's trying to stir up a shitstorm.... seriously wtf

It's funny how some things happen on accident and it turns out way more better than what was intended for.
I sympathize with you when it comes to peple who react like that. Hopefully people will learn that there are millions of ideas and millions of ways to approach it. Some of us want one thing and it comes out a slightly different way.
However, intended to be a skull illusion or not, it's still a wonderful concept and execution of the theme.

Here's a little story kinda pertaining to people throwing accusations etc around - I draw and began (never finished) painting a similar idea 6 or 7 years ago, two characters against the moon with clasped hands forming the skulls nose, their heads its eyes, etc (not having seen the vanity version until years after that, but having seen a few other skull illusion images). Mine was inspired by seeing a thumbnail sized version of this yoshitaka amano painting [link] and mistaking the skull for people's silhouettes, with elfen, pouffed up hairstyles. It's proof (to me) that artists sharing different inspirations can reach similar visual conclusions, especially regarding instantly recognisable, visceral and striking shapes like skulls. Anyway I'm glad I never finished my crappy painting cause yours is fantastic, beautifully done!

Very good! Illusions are great- check out the book 'Masters of Deception' if you are into those. It has Escher, Del Prete, and a lot of sweet stuff. The leaves and flowers are an especially nice touch.

At first I just saw the people in the picture and liked them so much, I printed the pic to show it to a friend of mine. In the morning, when I wanted to take the picture with me I couldn't find the couple any more. Only the skull. Gives me the creeps. GENIUS!

Very cool. The old-fashioned clothes (or what looks old-fashioned to me-maybe because of the coloring) make me want to think up a sad ghost story or something to go along with the picture.

What a really paradoxical piece! There is this uncomfortable tension here, like two people madly in love who can't ever be together, so that negativity is hanging behind them like an elephant in the room. I also really appreciate the painterly quality it has...it makes it very- I don't know-undefined? Like hard decisions and choices tend to be. The sharpness in their faces contrasts nicely within the piece, and the palette is so simple- color would have ruined the mood here. Very well done!
