It's sad that, with such popular anime such as D.Greyman, extremely original characters are sometimes created, so its hard for rising artists to really make something original. Fans will scream,"YOU JUST COPIED [insert anime/manga title here]!!!"
I mean, it's obviously not the case for artists like you, who are very popular. But it's hard for artists like me to get any sort of likeable and/or original character(s) out. I find myself constantly jotting down different ideas, then after browsing the web a little I see it's already been done... And most of the time I just pop out random shit like "Uh, okay, a barracuda-type, scissor-slinging character who works undercover as a fortune-teller but is actually an alien from a mega space organization... etc, etc."

hmm really? I've always been obsessed with original characters,but you know in all honesty i started out with the MOST unoriginal shit EVER: spinoffs of sailormoon. Like, i kept making up new sailors and villains sailormoon style and LOVED every bit of it ahahaha.But that was when i was 12 LOLOL Then when i suddenly found hyung tae kim, i was all OMFG HELLO GOD lol, and that cause a sudden drastic change in my art. And i also dropped the whole sailor moon thing and started thinking up other stories.
See the thing with me is that, stories always kind of came first, and i was never all too concerned with the originality aspect of characters, appearance wise OR personality wise. In fact i have some seriously unoriginal shit like, one of my character's names was/is "crow" which is like.. THE MOST fucking common OC name in the world HAHAHAH But hey, he still means the world to me and i don't care much about that, even though i did change his name LOL.
When you think about new character's what's your thought process like? Are you more concerned with their looks or their state of mind?

When I think up a character, I usually think of their appearance first. From there, I try to make up a name and other basic information such as age, interests, etcetera.
I am very concerned about a character's appearance no matter what. I try and make their background information more unique so that things even out.
Being extremely vain, the appearance of anyone or anything is very important to me and seems to tell a story all on its own.
