I imagine Gaster wanted to help out with rebuilding monster civilization in the early years of the underground. In the beginning he was probably trying to cope with his losses from the war but with some time he would want to pull his weight and not feel like a burden to others. He'd start making puzzles and create new ways to bring electricity into monster's homes and then- boom! He's on his way to becoming a real scientist! Or at least that's my theory/headcannon lmao.Handplates by zarla

It's definitely a theory which fits the story. And he must have appreciated having parents who encouraged all his puzzling and science. Those early years in the underground may have had a lot to making him into what he became (the positive parts).
