Description They had both been people she knew. One had been a teacher, one had been a friend. Now one was dead, and one was in the courthouse. Grace was still a university student, but she would never forget that night of first year…

Grace felt her bag rip before she heard the books cascade out onto the pristine library floor. She sighed, kneeling to gather them, biggest to smallest in her arms. She’d known for some time now that her high school backpack wasn’t going to survive more than another season with the materials at university. In her opinion, the only thing that had improved was the different varieties of foods available on campus.
“Ah, that looks like quite a bad rip.”  Grace looked over her shoulder. It was a girl wearing one of those long, faded green fall coats.
“Yeah, I keep meaning to go buy a new one but I always forget.” She shrugged, trying to smile.
“If you want, I know this one place online that sells awesome bags. I got mine from there! The girl turned her back to Grace, a sticky note with a website address already written down on it.
“Wow, thanks I’ll check it out!” Grace felt a real smile lift her face for the first time, warming muscles she hadn’t used in a while.
“No problem. I’m Candace, by the way.”
“Grace. Nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you too.”

That was how she’d met Candace. But Grace never would have thought she’d ever develop a hatred as strong as she did, later.

Professor Landon had dark, wavy hair. Grace loved how it had swept up, allowed to fall in tidy curls on his temples. His eyes had an almost sleepy look because they were hooded, their dark intensity the perfect oxymoron. She had spent many days accomplishing zero study because of him, and that had been another improvement from high school, for sure. She couldn’t find any explanation why she’d felt to drawn to him, but it didn’t matter, because Candace had caught his attention before she even mustered up enough courage to look at him straight.

Now both were gone, Professor Landon’s house had burnt down. Grace remembered Candace’s ecstatic face when she told her that night what her weekend would be, remembered shoving down the jealousy and smiling for her friend. It had all been so fast. It had shattered her idea of him. The morning after the fire, a crew had come to salvage whatever was left of Professor Landon’s house, and, finding the freezer intact had discovered the mutilated body of Candace.
Grace didn’t know what to think of either people.
