The Tokota and the Albatross

Long ago, a tokota was leading her pack through the rocky cliff sides of Coastal Pilitak, but they could not find any food. Predators and prey alike were scarce, and the tokotas were forced to strengthen themselves only with the few scattered berries they could find. Frustrated and with no alternatives, the pack's leader cried out to Aippaq in the night.

"My packmates are dying. It is not our time, great Aippaq. We have much more to do in this world, and I plead you to help us survive. There is no prey in the land, and we are starving to death."

Suddenly, a bright burst of light flashed through the night sky, and a vibrant vision of Aippaq appeared before her.

"Daughter," Aippaq spoke, their yellow eyes staring deep into the tokota's soul, "You are strong, and you are compassionate. For these reasons, I will help you. With the next morning, the sky will awaken with birds of all variety. You and your pack may hunt these birds to fill your stomachs and strengthen yourselves in your journey."

The tokota's eyes lit up, but before she could thank the deity that stood in front of her, Aippaq growled low, "But do not forget this: the albatross alone cannot be eaten. I have flown the skies as the albatross, the king of birds. It is a sacred animal. Take your fill of the gulls and ravens, but do not eat the albatross." With that warning, Aippaq was gone, their body blown away on the wind like a whisper.

The next morning, the tokota and her pack were awoken with the squawking of birds. Scores of birds drifted about the shore and rocky cliffs. Filled with triumph, hunger, and determination, the tokota leader set her eyes on the closest and largest bird.
