Story:
The Federation has recently lost several Federation Outposts near the edge of Federation space. The intelligence reports they have received show that the Outposts were destroyed by a new species previously encountered by only one Federation Starship: The USS Voyager. Starfleet Intelligence believes Species 8472 may be attempting to create a permanent doorway between our realms outside of Federation space, in neutral and mostly unexplored territory. They also believe Species 8472 are building a base, and colonizing planets in the area. Starfleet Command has ordered a fleet of ships to head into the area to investigate.

The time period is set several weeks after the USS Voyager returns home from the Delta Quadrant. =]
