Description FYI This is a tutorial for drawing with both digital art and traditional art! YAY!

I created this completely in Illustrator but I made the observation while studying stock photos and doodling. Then tested the idea with traditional art sketches.

I hope this helps! I would love to hear what you have to say and see what you create!

Thanks!

Program: Adobe Illustrator CS3
Tools/Effects: Wacom tablet pen, gradients and transparencies applied to some elements, type tool for text, drop shadow applied to some elements, Pattern applied to background, Pen tool used for lines.
Raster elements: no raster elements used.

PEAS Method to Artistic Self-improvementI came up with the PEAS method ("PEAS" stands for: Practice, Experiment, Ask for suggestions, & Study the world around you) about 5 years ago. In that time, I've seen significant changes in my own art and in the art of others! I figured that it's time to whip up a journal and share the PEAS method again.

These are the same concepts that I shared in the journal "How did you get so good at drawing?" which I posted about 5 years ago:

PEAS METHOD TO ARTISTIC SELF-IMPROVEMENT:
I my opinion and from experience, there are 4 things you can do to evolve as an artist...

Only as long as you think tigers, cats, and goats are satanic too - the star shape applies to them as well! lol But if it helps any, I made the wolf with seven steps! That's lucky! And not associated with death or sin AT ALL! Or is it? Oops! I guess I made a tutorial full of SINNNNNN! D: lol

Thanks!

So, how's that book progress going?

Crazdude In reply to urging [2012-06-24 19:57:36 +0000 UTC]

Not well D: I haven't heard from the author - last I knew he was going to his Wife's grandma's funeral and I told him to get in touch when he wasn't busy so we could talk about the next step (whether I have to do everything all over again or if I just have to do some small changes).

So I've been active in the nice weather and getting back in shape with my BF! We feel better about ourselves and have more energy already! Plus I lost about 15lbs that was gained while working on the illustrations - feels good to be lighter again!

And with this break from the illustrations, it seems that I'm on the verge of an artistic revival or possibly rebirth! The wolf face tutorial ended up helping ME far more than I thought it would! Since I just think of something and draw it - I start with the silhouette and don't use the typical circles and armatures that most artists use - I think it helped to put my subconscious thoughts about anatomy into words and test it.

This is pretty interesting; seems like I have a book of wolf photography somewhere in which the author describes his idea of the pinnacle of lupine facial aesthetics as basically a star shape. Or something like that. I'll have to find that now.

Crazdude In reply to Canis-ferox [2012-06-23 03:13:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh cool! Since I'm self-taught (through observation of my RL siberian huskies, trial and error, practice, and experimentation) I'm not familiar with the book you're talking about, but when I was testing this tutorial, I thought that I probably wasn't going to be the first to come up with the pentagram = wolf face. Heck, Satanists already associated the pentagram with the shape of an animal's head - a goat (with horns stabbing at the heavens and such)

By the way, hooooly crap! Thank you for visiting my gallery and commenting!

Canis-ferox In reply to Crazdude [2012-06-23 03:23:10 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that's cool~ I'm pretty much the same way, haha. This is just a book of photography and the photographer's commentary on the photos (mostly a bunch of backstories on the wolves and such). I've got it; I'll have to see if I can find the page that's on. And that's pretty interesting, it is a bit goatlike now that I think about it but I can see it working for a few animals.

Haha, you're welcome

YAY! I'd love to see how your wolf turns out!

LOL! It's funny that you say that because I was going to make a much larger, much more complicated tutorial/comic that involved my character Craz-wolf talking with me as I talked through how to make a perfect star for this and that it's called a pentagram... Let's just say there were a few parts where Craz-wolf made implications to heavy metal and summoning evil spirits! xP

Oh! LOL! Sure! I thought it was a tip that was specifically for your art program (I have Photoshop and didn't think it would apply! ) What was the tip?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Love2bd1 In reply to Crazdude [2012-06-23 02:33:33 +0000 UTC]

it was to fix the stabalizer on your art program
set it to a higher rate so the line doesnt immeditely settle down and can follow in a smooth direction
