Description
One of my favorite shows as a kid was "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers". And recently, mostly thanks to Linkara's "History of the Power Rangers" reviews and every episode being available on Netflix, I got back into the show.As a writer, I always wondered, what if the characters were more realistic and more three dimensional? I think the stories would be more interesting and less cheesy (even though I'm well aware that's part of the appeal of the show).
For example, why do the teens already know each other to begin with? I mean, seriously, did you ever imagine Jason ever really wanting to hang out with Billy? And how is it they get along so well all the time? No one EVER rubs one another the wrong way? No one ever questions Zordon? No one ever tells Alpha 5 to just stfu? Bulk and Skull actually went to school?
So as such, here are my versions of the Power Rangers (no "mighty morphin").
Jason- A very dedicated young man who grew up in the sports world. Always the captain, always the hero of the game. But inside, he grows tired of it all and wishes to do more. He's tired of people seeing the jersey on his chest but not the heart behind it. He finds an outlet when Zordon chooses him to become the leader of the Power Rangers.
In a fight, Jason holds his own quite well, growing up training for physical perfection. However sometimes he feels the other Rangers might not respect him as a leader.
Adam- (I went with Adam, rather than Zack, mainly because I believe has more potential, and it doesn't hurt that I'm a big fan of Johnny Yong Bosch. But I'd be lying if I was also trying to avoid that "black guy is the black ranger/Asian girl as the yellow ranger" thing)
Adam tends to find himself in trouble quite a bit due to his silly and carefree manner. In class, he spends more time making jokes at the teacher's expense, rather than sticking his nose in the textbook (however, somehow his grades are almost on par with Billy's). He finds himself in detention where he finds Bulk and Skull picking on a poor Billy Cranston. Adam comes to his rescue when he start's making jokes about Bulks weight. But when the insulted Bulk attempts to attack Adam, he is surprised to learn that the goofball Adam Park knows martial arts. Adam's compassion is what attracts Zordon to choose him as the black ranger.
As a ranger, Adam is the Spider-man of the group. He cracks jokes at the monsters, goofs off, and harasses the enemies. Sometimes though, that becomes his downfall. His lack of ability to take things seriously sometimes gets the other rangers hurt.
Kim- A two sided personality. To all her cheerleader and preppy friends, she's as airheaded as they come. To most people in fact, she's seen as someone who has nothing to offer the world but a pretty face. However, underneath that facade, she is a strong, smart and opinionated woman, who grew up in a broken home, and hides her pain inside, but always prevails and always strives to be something better. Her inner strength and her inability to accept failure is what attracts Zordon to be a the Pink Power Ranger.
As a Ranger, Kim can be narrow-minded at times, but is always there for her fellow rangers, even if she doesn't always get along with them. In fact, she's simply insulted that she had to be the "pink one" simply because shes a cute girl.
More to come...
Power Rangers where created by Jack Olesker and are owned by Haim Saban.
