Zerna are known to be extremely adaptable. Being made of magically-charged goo, they are able to easily infiltrate and interface with technology, as well as other creatures.
Here, Cil is giving Kaleb a friendly gooey hug before linking with their friend's nervous system. This allows the two to communicate together as if they're a single being.
Their merge can assume multiple forms. This time they thought it would be fun for Cil to act as some sort of gooey exosuit for Kaleb.
