This was originally gonna be a written piece and then I had issues with the pacing and pivoted into drawing instead. So I figured why not clean up what I had and offer that as bonus lit. Lol.

Draugr extricated himself from his mother’s grasp, his dark fur freshly licked smoother. He clambered over the larger felvarg’s paws, shaking himself off as he went. His fur fell back into its natural position. He moved to leave, but a few paces away he found himself glancing over his shoulder as his mother called out to him.

“Don’t go getting dirty again right away!”

The pup chose not to answer. They lived in a forest. It was best not to make promises he couldn’t keep. He scrambled away from their den in search of something more interesting to do. The pup was mindful of leaves that slipped underfoot and branches that tugged at his fur, but more for his own comfort rather than any effort to remain clean. He didn’t have to go far before the sound of a friend’s voice met his ears, but he slowed as he processed the tone. A second voice joined the conversation, its pitch and timber identifying the speaker as one of the pack’s adults.

“I don’t need to hear any more excuses from you,” the older felvarg said curtly.

“But I —“

“You heard me,” came the growled reply. “His parents are bound to be irate over this.”

Draugr lingered in the underbrush, careful to remain unseen. Through the branches he could see the skulking figure of one of his preferred playmates, her features contorted by frustration. Moisture glistened at the corners of her eyes and the faintest scent of blood mingled with the ambient fragrance of the woods. When the adult felvarg stalked away, Draugr crept out of the bushes.

“Boneyard?” he ventured at a whisper. “What happened?”

The other pup bristled as she whipped around to face him, her fur settling only after she’d stared at him for several seconds. She huffed, turning her body away from him even as she looked at him. “We were playing and that brat started harassing Selene. She didn’t want to fight him so I bit him to make him back off.”

These words were delivered in an angry rush, but once they were out Boneyard broke eye contact. Tension crackled in the air, leaving Draugr with the certainty that not all was spoken.

“Then what happened?” he asked, edging closer to his friend.

Boneyard grumbled and glared at the space in front of her. “Then he whined like some helpless whelp and one of the adults came to break it up,” she said with a snort. “She didn’t seem to care how he was acting towards Selene, just that he wailed like he was being gutted.”

“It doesn’t smell like anyone was gutted,” Draugr commented.

“That’s because all I did was bite his ear,” Boneyard scoffed.

Draugr leaned forward to touch his nose to the other pup’s shoulder, but as he met her fur a mischievous thought crossed his mind. “Did you give him an ear notch to remember you by?” he asked.

Although Boneyard’s muzzle was still pointed away, the corners of her mouth turned upward and her eyes angled towards him. “Hah, no! Not even. He doesn’t deserve any cool scars anyway.”
