2001: A Space Odyssey, directed by Stanley Kubrick, is one of best movies I have seen as well as one of the most haunting. It is pure visual storytelling and sound. (I recommend downloading the soundtrack) There are very few films so ripe for analysis as 2001 and that's a large part of the reason that I love it.

The entire film is about evolution, showing us man's roots, his present status and then his future. It's about our journey as a species towards higher and higher planes, leading to this eventual massive evolutionary jump. (When Dave goes beyond the infinite and comes back to Earth as the Star Child)

As much as I love Kubrick's other films, I sometimes wish he would have made another film as abstract and cosmically concerned as this. Over forty years later, 2001 the year has come and gone, but 2001 the movie is more relevant to the world we live in than ever before, providing a vision of a humanity that could be if we finally get our act together and evolve.
