Trying to get back into making MLP content so here's this little family (more of a duo now whoops)
I don't want to set too much in stone now but I'll put my first thoughts for their backstories below

Pink line - Marriage/Consistent relationship

Shifting Sands
A unicorn born in a small desert village. He was born utterly hairless and grew up to be strangely tall compared to other desert ponies. His parents seemed to love him, but he couldn't help but notice the strange looks given from his siblings and other villagers.
He never quite fit in. The small village made him feel suffocated. Shifting Sands impulsively left his village, becoming a sort of nomad. He dabbled in countless strains of dubious magic. He sought out scrolls and artifacts from traders or ruins.
As he aged, he fell out of this practice. He felt a bit disgusted at himself. What was the point? Was he really going to put this magic to use, on others? The thought made him sick.
As he wandered, more aimless than ever, he encounters Mira

Mira, The Nurturer
A sphinx who uses her magic to maintain an oasis. A lush garden surrounding a lake, she lets any travelers inside to rest and have a fresh meal. When Sands wanders in and she learns more about the state he's in, she feels a particular fondness for him. Eventually he becomes a permanent part of her little sphere. Mira shares her knowledge of nurturing magic, and Sands manages to catch on. He goes on outings to sell Mira's produce to nearby villages at affordable prices and learns to use his magic to the aid of other's mental health.

Odyssey
Child of Sands and Mira, Odyssey has high magical capabilities. Their parents were very careful to teach them about ethics from the day they could comprehend any sort of teachings. They're significantly taller than most ponies, though nowhere near the scale of an adult sphinx. Their father has immersed them in pony culture through taking them on his outings.
One day, after a particularly long journey, Odyssey and Sands return to the oasis to find Mira gone. They're both immediately alarmed. Shifting Sands has them wait there for a few days, hoping for her return. But it never comes. The lush biome begins to wilt.
Sands is shattered and drags Odyssey along on a desperate and ultimately fruitless search.
Odyssey realizes it's their turn to care for him, and resolves to get them both out of the desert.
