I love Sparta, while not so much into democracy as Athens, they were the only polis in Greek that allowed female rulers. When talked to an athenian journalist their queen said, "because only spartan women gives birth to real men".

I've heard an even stranger story:
When(I forget if it was Attila the Hun for Ghenghis Khan) sent his cavalry out to conquer some land somewhere, apparently he insisted that they ride mares so that they could "milk" them for rations, if you know what I mean.

Funny related story. I was a baby, my mom had breast milk in a bottle for me, and one of my uncles, USED the breast milk as coffee creamer, asked for more, and when my mom told him what he used, he went 'oh... well do you have more?'
