I would like to point out that canonically the background of series has shown that there is a lot we don't see in their average day today lives. Also, for your consideration in some episodes (when you look closely) we can see that their world has monsters, tartturis, and theives. Keeping, this in mind its safe(at least until the end of season seven) to assume that their world is just as bad as ours, with the key difference being that they're better at defending themselves from the worst of it than humans.
