Well, it is kind of unfair to say that Spike saved crystal empire, it is like Celestia saying " you was not the one who delivered Crystal Heart to Cadance, you will not be the one who saved it ", I think Twilight did most of the job, Spike helped her, and the others paid side roles.

Spike dreamed to be a Knight when he tried to safe rarity, and I must say, he was far better looking knight in his dream then Shinning Armor in his silly armor.

My theory on Shiny's reluctance about being a father....(Aside from comedy). Let's look at what Shiny's purpose based on his Cutie Mark is all about. Being a protector. It's his mission as a Royal Guardspony. It's how he got his Cutie Mark (By discovering his Shield spell). Now let's look at his track record.
Failed to protect his Kingdom from Discord and the Changelings
Failed to protect his wife from Chrystallis
Failed to protect his Princess from Chrystallis
Failed to protect his little sister from Chrystallis when she was right
Failed to protect even himself!
So at this point he's thinking...."If I can't even do any of that HOW THE BUCK AM I GONNA PROTECT MY CHILD!?"
In other words, the poor stallion's on the verge of Cutie Mark Failure Syndrome! He needs some serious confession time with Cadence, the Princesses and his family to work this out!
