Don't get me wrong, if I was starving on a desert island and it was me or the horse, then that thing would be burgers faster than AJ could eat an apple. But any other time I just see it as such an offense to nature. Horses are such beautiful creatures and they are incredibly useful as well, so why eat them when you can eat something that serves no other purpose than to be food. Like pigs.... or any low ranking personnel in an 'Aliens' movie.

Pigs are actually very intelligent and sensitive animals, and their feeding habits (eating just about anything) are ecologically useful to humans as well. If they weren't so tasty, they'd probably be common household pets like dogs or cats. The only reason they're not is because our culture has labeled them (again, arbitrarily), a "food animal", and many people are too sentimental to raise the same kinds ofΒ animals for companionship that they're grilling for dinner.
But when you get right down to it, it makes no difference. Horses can be useful, but there are plenty that aren't being used, including those in the wild. And an animal being "beautiful" counts for exactly squat in the food chain. It's silly, and rather awful, to label one species as food and another off-limits for consumption because it's beautiful or ugly.

Yes they are intelligent, but they aren't the trash compactors everyone thinks they are. They can eat anything you or I can, and like us, they will get sick if they eat poisoned, rotted, or moldy food. Where as a horse can be used for many things in addition to being fed leftovers, such as transport and labor. So given the choice between letting the horse live or letting the pig live, I'm going to go with the useful one I can ride. Besides, there's a historical reason why pigs are considered food animals and horses are not. When you're chasing after something with a spear, a pig is a hell of a lot easier to catch up with than a horse.

That's all true, but none of that provides any good reason why one shouldn't eat horse meat, just reasons why we eat pig (besides them being delicious). And historically, humans HAVE eaten horses, and continue to do so today. Just not in the United States.
The only real point against eating themΒ you've stated so far is that horses can be used for other things besides food, which is true, but that would only prevent us from eating horses if there were too few to provide for both food and other uses, and would be reflected in the availability of horse meat. I can tell you without a doubt that there areΒ more than enoughΒ horses for both eating and working, if we ever decided to embrace the former. We'd have horses raised for slaughter (or perhaps hunted in the wild) and horses raised for sale as pets or rural labor. No biggie.

Now you are just restating my original post. I clearly stated that if I didn't have a choice, I would eat the horse, but seeing as I do have a choice, and pigs taste better, I'd rather eat the pig. Either way it still comes down to personal preference, which brings me to my next question. Why the /hell/ are you up on your soap box over /this/ of all things?!

But your original point was that eating horse was "crossing a line". Not that you, personally, would choose to eat pigs (or cows or chicken or whatever), but that it was actually wrong to eat horses.
As for why I'm dragging out this conversation, I'm genuinely curious about that point of view, because it's very common. There are animals that we kill and eat without a second thought and animals that we (depending on the country) recoil from the idea of being slaughtered for food. I don't understand it, and I'm wondering if it really is simple and superficial as "horses are beautiful creatures and pigs are ugly".

I was referring to the instance in the comic. I mean honestly, what school would spring for horse meat when pork and chicken are so much cheaper and easily accessible? I never said it was wrong to eat them, or that I wouldn't if the circumstances were right, just that I would prefer not to. And you probably are right that it is a cultural thing. If you live in a first world country were you have plenty of choices and aren't starving on the streets, its a lot easier for society to say "Hey, lets eat the ugly things first, these other ones are pretty."

Well, that's kind of the joke. I think the punch line can be forgiven for ignoring the economic reality of real-world butcher markets.
And I thought you were making an argument that eating horses is wrong, not just that eating other animals is better or more efficient. Apologies.

This is either a reference to the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror segment with the same premise, or a nod to Cupcakes.

The key difference is Pinkie Pie has nothing to do with it...OR DOES SHE? She seems to want to vehemently drop the subject.

Humanoid Pinkie's line still makes me wonder if that's actually human meat, made from the lost Pipsqueak, in spite of what the boxes say.
