I must admit KH2 was my biggest disappointment in the series, though.
It's not the worst game, but it just doesn't feel like KH in term of gameplay, way too much button mashing, they completely whiped out the exploring part that was something I enjoyed in the first one (and in CoM), and the story is full of plotholes and stuff that could have been done a better way.

i'm not sure how you played KH1, but as far as i remember there was alot, if not more, single button mashing. KH2 at least added the cinematic action scenes and made you push other buttons besides X.
Also the plot holes for 2 are all explained in 356/2 days, 3D, and to a lesser extent Re:Coded.

I'm not talking about the fact that you're pressing the same button, what I mean is that in KH2 the game is pretty easy, and the whole game is solely based around battles where you spend the whole time in the air without barely even touching the ground, and the attacks didn't feel quite as natural (as in, linked to the moment you pressed the button) as they did before. Cooperations were cool, but they weren't really that inventive, and reactions involving heartless came kind of out of nowhere (like that reaction against the armored knight, it felt just like a way to make the 1000 heartless battle less long and boring, they should have made more creative things, like actually including those behemoths and having Sora climb on one of them and using it to destroy an entire wave of them or something).
And as I said, in KH1 there was a lot of exploration going on, with little mechanisms to decode (and the spells had an use outside of battles, even ten years later I learned that you could freeze the bubbles in hollow bastion), it was a lot more diverse.
Yes, most plotholes were explained, but not all of them (like how the heck maleficent returned, why Pete wasn't there in KH1, or why Ariel treated Ursula as if she had never seen her before), and even then, they should have been said in the first place (KH2fm corrected lots of things, like the Organization's whereabouts, by making us see their meetings, the same way it happened in CoM and with Maleficent in KH1).
It's been getting better when it comes to gameplay, though. The more recent games all have the exploration back to a certain extent (with 3D having gigantic areas), and the gameplay has been feeling more natural and creative (my favorite would be BBS, and this time they used QTEs with different buttons, with each of them doing something specific to the battle it was in).
