Description
This was inspired by the 1955 film Marty, a personal favorite of mine; I just saw it again recently.

After long since resigning himself to a bachelor's life, Bronx butcher Marty Piletti (Ernest Borgnine) puts his feelings of low self-esteem aside and accepts his mother's advice to go out on a date. He eventually ends up in the company of plain high school teacher Clara Snyder (Betsy Blair); to both their surprise, they enjoy their evening of earnest conversation and plan to see each other again. Unfortunately, Marty finds himself swayed by the people in his life... his mother, who fears abandonment if he marries, and his friends, content to continue in their aimless lives of bachelorhood... and doesn't call Clara.
The movie concludes as Marty comes to his senses and dashes to a nearby pay telephone, expressing both his interest in Clara and his distaste for his friends' attitude in the short speech included in my piece.
