Description Based on Edgar Allan Poe's short story 'The Masque of the Red Death', this short film was created for my University assessment at the end of 2006 for the University of Technology, Sydney.

(Update, 2021): The view the film remastered in 4K, visit:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2Nq-v…

Since its original submission for my course assessment the film has evolved significantly into something which I hope can be considered no longer just a student film, but something that is festival ready.

Pre production took 5 months, shooting was over 3 days, and post production took 18 months.

Most of the cast and crew donated their time to the project and have done an amazing job.

I am happy to answer any question in regards to the production, but in the meantime, please enjoy the film!

Camera Used: Panasonic P2 HVX-200 @ 720P
Editing Suite: Final Cut Pro (colour grading in Premiere Pro CS3)

Over all, great. Lots of good effects made up for a small budget and the impossibility to follow the script by heart. The only thing I had a problem with was that half of that narrative wasn't necessary, like when the prince advances on the Red Death, we know what he's doing, we don't need Poe describing it in our ear ALL the time.

This was without a doubt well made as written in the book. Poe would indeed be proud. AND THE MUSIC WAS THE BOMB!!!!

This was an amazing short. As a fan of Poe's stories I must say you've capptured the essence of his eerie tale well.

I loved the suspense, the music and the narration was fabulous.

Well done

This is...I cannot put into words how well-planned and choreographed this was. Hmm...I wonder if we can convince my reading teacher to show this to my class? We're studying Poe right now, and we just finished the tell-tale heart. It'd be amusing to see my classmate's horrified faces again, seeing as Right after we concluded reading the Tell-Tale Heart, we watched the short movie for it, and it show the bit were he dismembered the old man, and everyone but me and my friends (who were familar with this story, and many of Poe's other writings) had the most terrified and disgusted looks on their faces. It was great.

Amazing!! I showed this to my sister, a fellow Poe lover, and my brother! She's 12 and he's 11, but they loved it and didn't get scared until the part where they started to spit out blood.
I think every work of Poe's should be made into a film like this!! Keep it up!

What a great build up and suspense with the montage and overlapping imagery. The added laughter was a brilliant choice.

Before "It was in the last chamber..." there's about two paragraphs of text in the original story that you cut out. I was actually a little disappointed because I wanted to see how you guys would have made the different colored rooms.

I love how through-out the opening, it's like watching the ground as you wander in circles, coughing up blood. Very creepy and very appropriate for the opening.

emrox61 [2011-10-23 02:31:38 +0000 UTC]

That was amazing! It stuck to the original story, and it was well portrayed, acheiving the attempted feel. My concerns about it, however, is that it doesn't really go in depth with the seven chambers; it doesn't really even SHOW the seven chambers, in my opinion. The only evident chamber was the black one. Also, I felt that at some points, the cinematic effects were slightly overdone, mostly wherever the Red Death was present (the disease, not the actual character). It was still a beautiful work of art, though! It could've easily passed for a pro's work.

You didn't give credit to Edgar Allan Poe for the story, I think you should have.
But overall, very well done, you managed to capture the eerie atmosphere of the story.

This was incredible. I am at a loss for description.

I'll do it in segments.

Opening: I really enjoyed the credits for some reason [the opening ones], and the scene with the crying mother was perfectly executed. It definitely brought the overbearing feeling that death has. And when surrounded by so much, the coloring was perfect.

Music: I would get this on my ipod, it's well written and perfectly executed, I love it, love it love it. I'm a music fanatic. It had the perfect feeling for this story.

Characters/Design.: Some designs seemed a little lackiluster to me and the acting was a little rough around the edges, HOWEVER hearing that people donated their time to this to add to portfolio and have exposure, I am beyond impressed! Though maybe not all up to professional par, they are very close! These actors could easily make a lot of money already with their talent [and I don't say this in jest, I am no actor myself]. Incredible jobs they did.

Scenery: A+! All of it was perfect, I can't say enough about it.

Overall: I love this story, it's amazing to see it come to life. I would have liked to see a little more of the "colored rooms" but it wasn't necessary either way. I felt the onimous doom that the chimes of the black clock brought. This is something I would buy on a DVD, it's quality cannot be ignored.

You are talented as is everyone who worked on this short film. Hats of to you and I hope you go far. [I know this is a few years late, since I just discovered it but, you know how it goes].

Very good but I do have two things about it. I know money and stuff is tight for filming but it would have been awesome if you had a creepy corpse-like mask with blood on it, to show the audience why everyone was terrified stiff.

Also, the scene where they unmask him and find no face, marking the assailent as Red Death himself. I know they go together but it would have been a great affect if it had been added.

Still really like the video though.

Thanks for the comment. What you were describing was in the original cut of the film (a facial shot of the Red Death), but it was cut from the final version to maintain a more mysterious image of the character. But here is an imagine of what it looked like (out Red Death actor, in full make-up): [link]

I forgot something in my previous comment! Death reminded me a lot of the death character from Ingmar Bergman's movie The seventh seal. I know death looks pretty much the same in lots of movies and all but still, thought I'd mention it 'cause I liked the way death looked here

Wow! I'm sure you've been told a lot that this film is amazing, but I'll say it again: AMAZING! The atmosphere, the art, the music, the editing, everything is just superb! As a film student myself I know how difficult it is to complete a project like this one and I'm sure you and all the people working there are very pleased with the result, it's fantastic, festival ready indeed. Also, congrats on the sepia aura you gave to the death character, a very nice touch for both the visuals and the narrative. Hope to see more from you soon!
