Chapter 10 – She's a Demon, Brooke.I was alone that night. By alone I mean without Red. I was by myself in my room after Red and her family had left, Jean wanted me to stay.
I lied in my bed quietly, listening throughout the house for footsteps. I was terrified that Caroline would come into my room.
After I was convinced that she was sleeping, I relaxed a little.
My throat was dry.
I'm thirsty…
I sighed and slowly got up out of bed, tiptoeing to the kitchen and pouring myself a glass of water. I froze when I heard the shuffling of feet.
It came from the dark hallway, whoever was there could see me, but I couldn't see them.
"Jean?" I whispered hoarsely, "Is that you?... Caroline?"
"It's me Brooke." Came Caroline's voice, drifting through the dark with a cold eerie hiss.
My face reddened and my heart beat faster, "What are you doing…"
"I wanted to talk to you."
"So talk…" I answered her, clutching the glass of water tightly so my knuckles were white.
"About Red."
"Okay…"
The peasant and the princess…
I could see her features slightly outlined by the light filtering through the windows as my eyes adjusted.
"I don't like her Brooke. She's evil and God hates her." Her voice came again softly.
"She isn't evil" I said, my bottom lip trembling.
"She's a demon Brooke, I don't want you to be evil too."
"Just because she's a lesbian doesn't make her a demon Caroline!" I said a little too loudly. I saw her shrink back into the darkness slightly.
"It's not even that, Brooke. You've seen how she acts. You saw her eyes when she punched me, you've seen when she gets mad."
"So?" I choked, remembering how Red's eyes had darkened so intensely only a few weeks before. "She was protecting me."
"From what Brooke."
I stammered, "You…"
"You think I'd hurt you Brooke?" She accused, stepping towards me, "You think I'd lay hands on my own sister?"
I felt myself choke, "I…"
"Shut up." Caroline hissed, "Or I will hurt you. I wanted to be nice to you, you know?"
What do you mean by that…
"I wanted you to be my sister. I wanted to like you. But I can't."
"Why not…" I rasped, glaring at her through the dark.
"Because now you're evil too. I tried to get you away from her. I tried to save you from that demon."
"She is NOT a Demon Caroline!" I yelled.
Her eyes widened and she stepped back again.
Brooke?
The voice sounded like it came from outside, but it was inside my head, clear as day.
Brooke?
It came again softly, pulsating through my mind. My hands shook, "What?"
Caroline's eyes widened and she stepped back, staring at me.
Are you listening to me?
My face reddened, I felt dizzy. "Who are you?"
Caroline took another step back, looking slightly scared, "What are you talking about Brooke…"
"I…" I choked, "No one…" Without thinking, I pushed past Caroline and rushed back to my room, clicking on the lights and grabbing my phone off my shelf. I dialed Red's number hurriedly and waited impatiently for her to pick up.
I glanced at the clock, 3:00. The numbers sent a chill up my spine.
Red picked up, sounding sleepy, "Brooke?"
"I… Hi! Red…" I blabbered.
"Brooke… Are you alright?"
"Yeah… I um… I just needed to… yeah…"
"Talk to me?" She asked, sounding a bit more awake.
I nodded, then realizing she couldn't see, I added a little "Uh huh."
She sounded pleased, "Well… is there anything specific you wanted to talk about?"
Caroline thinks you're a demon.
"No…" I whispered, folding my knees up to my chest and curling myself around the phone.
"Okay… well, since I've got you on the phone, I have a surprise for you."
"Do you?" I asked, my eyebrows raising.
"Yup." She said softly, "Tomorrow, we're gonna play a trick."
"A trick?"
There was a short pause, then a hurried "Uh huh" from her end, I smiled.
"Yeah a trick, you'll see on the bus tomorrow, If people ask, tell them that I'm sick okay?"
Confused, I sat back up, "Sick? What are you going to do?"
She chuckled, I melted.
"You'll see…"
After a few more minutes, we hung up, I turned off my light and lied back in my bed, relaxing, wondering what kind of trick she was going to play tomorrow.
