Chapter 13 - The swimsuit.

   Chris woke us up early the next morning, bouncing down the stairs, "Come watch the movie you two!"

   I was still stunned from what happened last night. I smiled and got up, stretching and poking Red in the side to wake her up.

   She groaned and rolled over, "What about a movie?"

   "The movie from last night, your drag show?"

   Her eyes lit up, "Oh THAT!"

   "Yeah, silly" I laughed in mid-yawn.

   We went upstairs and watched the movie, I noticed my fly was undone.

   "Oh my god" I said, my face turning crimson.

   Red laughed hysterically, "Always the show stealer, Brooke. The center of attention."

   I blushed again and laughed as we downed our glasses of milk. We went back down the hallway to take turns in the bathroom.

   I stared at myself in the mirror for a second, sticking out my tongue and making a funny face. I laughed.

   I haven't been this happy in a long time…

   I pinned my hair back and slid into a pair of Red's pants. They weren't tripp pants. They were tight all around. Black and covered with chains. I straightened my white tank top and pushed my hair behind my shoulders. The necklace hung loosely around my neck, just long enough not to get caught in my shirt.

   I leaned forward and drew on my eyeliner carefully.

   I wonder what Caroline is doing right now…

   I imagined her sitting at her little desk in her room, plotting revenge on Red. I laughed and shook my head.

   I put on some lip gloss, I loved the smell of it. It smelled like Strawberry Fanta.

   I smiled at myself and stepped back, watching myself in the mirrors, "I like my hair today" I mumbled, remembering what Red had said about complimenting myself every morning.

   Surprisingly I felt better.

   I stepped out of the bathroom and let Red have her turn. She smiled at me as she stepped by, "You look great today Brooke."

   "Thanks" I said, blushing a little.

   I waited in the living room, one leg crossed over the other. Chris came and sat across from me, "You looking forward to today?"

   I shrugged, "Sure" I laughed, "I don't really like Tuesdays though…"

   She smiled, "Don't you have a field trip today?"

   I perked up, "I Do!" I remembered. Red had changed her History to the same block as mine just in time for the Field trip to the lake.

   We were going to Kalamalka lake to "Study the history of water levels." I think Mr. K. just wanted to take us swimming.

   "I need to get my bathing suit on the way to school today then, " I reminded Chris.

   She nodded and smiled, "I know, that's part of the reason I woke you up earlier."

   Red came out of the bathroom, "We gonna go?"

   Chris nodded, "Don't forget your bathing suit Jazz."

   Red smiled, "Got it in my bag already."

   "And a towel?"

   "Yup."

   We piled into the car and headed off to my house. It wasn't that far away. When we got there, Red decided she would stay in the car. I got out and ran into the house, "Jean!" I yelled, "I came to get my swimsuit!"

   There was no answer.

   Hm, I guess she's already gone to work…

   I shrugged and went to my room, sifting through my drawers. My suit wasn't there.

   I paused for a moment, thinking.

   Maybe I could borrow one of Caroline's… I'm sure she wouldn't mind… I've borrowed them before…

   I debated this for a few seconds, grabbing an extra change of clothes, then went to Caroline's room, rummaging through her bathing suit drawer. Yes… she has a drawer JUST for her bathing suits. Mostly bikinis.

   I found the most modest suit in there. A small white bikini with tiny little cherries printed all over it. I shrugged and stuffed it into my bag, grabbing a red beach towel out of the bathroom and rushing back outside, slamming the door behind me and jumping back in the car.

   When we got to the school, the bus was waiting in the parking lot, most of the kids were on it already. Me and Red went on and sat in the front.

   A couple of kids had their bathing suits on already. Their backpacks bulged with extra clothes and sunscreen and water bottles. I smiled and leaned my head back on the plain grey seat in the sun.

   "I love summer…"

   "I do too."

   The bus started up and Mr. K. came on and sat beside us, "Hello girls." He said merrily, his nose white with sunscreen.

   "Hi" we answered.

   "You both ready to swim?"

   We laughed, "Yup, thanks for taking us."

   "No problem, we all need a break sometimes right?"

   Red and I nodded.

   The bus ride was long and hot. I brushed my hair out of my eyes countless times and fanned my face, "I can't wait to get in the water…"

   Red nodded, her eyes closed. I could tell she was annoyed by the boys screaming out some stupid never-ending song in the back of the bus.

   The bus driver scowled and turned up the radio in attempt to drown them out.

   I kissed a girl, by Katy Perry floated through the bus. I saw Red smile as I sang along softly, gazing out the window at the trees and buildings that whizzed by at the speed of light.

   I heard her groan and felt her head drop onto my shoulder, "It's so hottt…."

   I nodded and blushed slightly, smiling to myself, fanning her with the list of field-trip rules we were given.

   As we pulled into the parking place for the busses, everyone got out. Most of the kids ran to the change rooms, Red and I walked.

   I smiled as we walked into the change rooms, I changed into the bikini. I felt exposed, but it wasn't too bad. Red walked out in a pair of shorts, and a black bikini top.

   We walked towards the water.

   I grinned and broke into a run, "Race you!" I yelled, sprinting towards the crashing blue waves.

   I heard Red laugh as she chased after me, she was right on my heels.

   I jumped and landed in the shallow water, it was just deep enough I could float.

   I yelped from the cold shock of water and laughed as Red stood there with her mouth open, frozen, the water up to her thighs.

   "Come on in, chicken." I teased, splashing a bit of water at her.

   She yelped and grinned down at me, "You little… I'm gonna get you."

   I laughed and waded out further, 'You gotta come in the water if you're gonna get me."

   She laughed and rolled her eyes, counting down slowly from five.

   "Five… four… three… two… One!" She yelled, and jumped into the water, coming back up, "Holy fuck that's cold!"

   I laughed and she swam after me.

   The soft clay squished between my toes as I got used to the water lapping over my arms. After a while it was warm, and I relaxed, no longer shivering. I dived under the surface when Red wasn't looking and swam towards her, popping up in front of her.

   She yelped and smiled, "There you are, I was looking for you."

   I grinned, "I love swimming…"

   She nodded, "I do too" she answered before dunking her head under the water.

   She came up, shaking her head wildly, drops of water spraying everywhere. I laughed and covered my face, "Hey!"

   I waded towards her and jumped on her back, wrapping my legs and arms around her, holding on tight. She grinned and swam towards the dock. I giggled and held on tight.

   When we got under the dock, she stopped. The tiny reeds wrapped around our arms and tore free from the mossy wooden pillars.

   I made a face and brushed one off of my shoulder, "It's kind of gross down here…"

   Red nodded and waded towards me, pulling me close.

   I froze, the laughing of the other kids melted into background noise. The sun filtered through the cracks of the dock above and sent tiny rays of greenish-yellow light cascading across the calm ripples of the shallow blue-green water.

   I smiled, "Hi…" I whispered, laughing softly and reaching forward, brushing a green strand of seaweed off of Red's cheek.

   She smiled, "Hey…"

   I watched her for a moment, silent.

   The sun drifted behind a fluffy white cloud and the world seemed to darken slightly, to a calming green paradise.

   I was on an island in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by things untouched by human hands, it was pure.

   Red stepped towards me and wrapped her arms around my waist, pulling me close to her.

   I sighed and melted into her touch, my world spinning. I breathed in and smelled burnt Cedar, Mint and fresh water.

   She smiled softly and her lips touched mine. A gentle kiss that enveloped me and calmed me. I weakened and rested my arms around her shoulders, kissing back.
