Description
Character: Persephone, Goddess of Spring GrowthSource: Greek Mythology & Yoshitaka Amano's "Hiten"
Seamstress/Model: Tess [cupcake-rufflebutt]
Photography: Sonja Carter [Soulfire Photography]
Location: Katsucon 2012
Construction Notes:
It is amazing, the difference that a good wig can make for a costume. I wore this last summer and was generally unhappy with how it looked and photographed, but after several months of stewing over what had gone wrong, I was able to pinpoint the wig, which was much too platinum and modern in style -- too "Barbie" for an ancient Greek deity. Wanting to give the costume another try, I chose a dark blonde (my natural colour, oddly enough) in a longer, slightly curled style. Not only does it frame my face and upper body better, but the darker colour compliments the costume so much more and allows the tiny details to pop a bit. I still haven't been able to get around to all the beading I'd like to add to the scarves, but I did add a few tassels and rhinestones here and there, as well as tweak the jewelry I had made. All in all, I'm infinitely more pleased -- it always stinks to work so hard on a costume and then hate the way it looks on you -- and think I'll be wearing her quite a bit more in the future. Thank you to Sonja for the beautiful photography!
For anyone curious, this costume is adapted from an artbook image by Yoshitaka Amano -- [link] -- that seemed to fit my vision of how Persephone might have looked in her youth, prior to her abduction to the Underworld. I still have plans to make a darker, more grayscale Persephone as representative of her latter days as Queen of the Underworld at some point in the future. I also feel I ought to state that it was never my intention to create a historically accurate Greek costume, though that would also be quite fun for a future project!

That's such a cool idea for a costume I love mythology! You look fantastic. I love the colors and the fabric choices and the bead things incorporated under the bust make nice accents. I like the wig choice, though I didn't see the old one. It looks wonderful!

This is so gorgeous!!!!
I wish amano did more goddess designs but I couldn't find any
We're actually doing a huge hercules group at a-kon but I don't like any of those designs, but my friend said that I could join them anyway...it would be awesome if you could come too!

Thanks! I suppose it's worth noting that this design isn't Persephone, per se, it's just a design of a goddess-like figure that I interpreted as Persephone. I actually went back and forth for a while with whether I ought to say I was Iris (Goddess of Rainbows) or Persephone, but ultimately I went with Persephone since I had intended to cosplay her in the first place. There are dozens of other Amano designs that could be easily interpreted as goddesses. Be creative! C:
A "Hercules" group sounds fun! I'd feel a little silly, though, not having a costume specific to the movie or knowing anyone in the group. n__n; I've always intended to make Megara, but I wouldn't be able to get her finished by A-Kon and I'm sure your group already has one, given she's the most obvious choice for a girl to cosplay from "Hercules," LOL. Oh wells, thanks for the invite!

I think most of us can blame Rick Riordan's glorious, glorious mind for our newfound love of mythology. n__n; Good luck with Athena!

I have to agree, I love love LOVE the darker wig, it seems to soften everything and blend nicely with the color palette of the costume! I can't wait to see more photos
