One of the first robot stories written was published in 1894 by Ambrose Bierce, called "Moxon's Master." Though the story does not speak of the builder and the his creation playing chess, that was the story I thought of when I saw this picture. Very well done. And there's nothing wrong with a little shameless promotion.

The robot reminds me of the one in "Laputa: The Castle in the Sky" (Studio Ghibli). Very good lighting and composition.
