This kind of nightThis dark, black vastness
makes you realise
you were placed on this giant ball of
dirt and rock and water
for absolutely no apparent reason at all.
This view you have
of space on this night
gives you the knowledge
that in all your maddening sorrow, or
your fun-at-the-fingertips life,
you have never felt small.
You know that you are
in fact
a single speck of dust in space.
In the big scheme,
you are nothing, an atom
invisible to the naked eye of the
ancients, who may or may not
have created your kind long ago.
You have never felt lonely,
and you think back,
to all the beloved ones you let go
back in the day,
realising you time and time again let go
of the one thing that makes life worth living:
another atom
another single insignificant being with whom you create
your purpose, and make your own way.
That one person that could've made you
everything.
