Ellie: the good hearted lesbian with joel: regarded by both rabbidluigi and joshscorcher to be 1 of thee most evil characters in gaming

I bet these two dudes you mentioned wouldn't let their loved ones die on the off chance that there might be a cure that's likely going to be used as political leverage for the advancement of a dying group (Fireflies).
And you know what else I bet? That they wouldn't be calling themselves "evil" then either.
So is Joel selfish? Definitely. But evil? No.
And we don't know if Ellie is a lesbian for certain. She could very well be bisexual.

Reasons i said the comment about joel being evil:
1. The fireflies might of been genuine about saving the world, but joel killing the doctors definitely extinguished all hope of making the cure
2. Time that joel spent wondering about his family: 20 years, remember folks sometimes greiving for too long can hinder your thinking
3. It can be theorized that ellie would of gladdly sacrificed herself so that she can help others to recover from this plague, but joel lying to her after he killed the doctors who wanted to extract the cure would be considered evil
But hey its just a bunch of theories, game theories and character interpretation

1. Joel didn't extinguish anything.Β Β When Ellie first mentions it, his reply is: "Yeah, we've heard that before, huh, Tess?"Β It's quite clear that finding a cure had been attempted before. And since the Fireflies are a small (largely regarded as a terrorist) group, I highly doubt that the governmental forces didn't have more resources and their own doctors.
2. Grieving about your loved ones (impaired thinking caused by emotional pain) doesn't make someone evil.Β Evil stems from the pleasure one gets when they inflict pain, just because they can.
3. Sure, it can be theorized, but we'll never know how Ellie would have reacted if she had been told the truth.Β Marlene made sure she didn't get to make that choice in the first place. And then Joel had to somehow rectify that by making another choice for her. So if by your definition Joel is evil, then so is Marlene for doing the exact same thing.
Now on to this magical cure and its implications.
As things stood at this point in the story, The Fireflies were done for. Now the military would have finally been able to concentrate all their disposable forces and resources towards protecting what was left of the civilians from the bandits and the infected. Maintaining some sense of order and possibly even continuing the search for a cure.
Even if killing Ellie would have provided a cure, and that's a big if, letting it fall into the hands of the Fireflies would further divide what was left of humanity. Again. Because they would again gain civilian support, they would again start fighting the government. And from then on, here goes another round of good old non infected slaughtering each other with lots of collateral damage on the side.
But hey, I guess breaking down what's left of the population into further factions fighting each other is good for survival. Instead of banding together like they should have done from the beginning.
Joel isn't evil. He did what he did out of selfishness, but he made the right choice without even caring. That's more than Marlene ever did, despite all her good intentions.

oh man sorry for intervention but I agree with your every word. Joel did saved the world 'cause Ellie became the world of his. And who would you want to save in this rotten world of humans with this potential cure/vaccine? Someone like David and his team? Rippers, marauders, killling for a pair of shoes? No. This world isn't worth a life of a child. But a life of a child is worth the whole world.
