During the end of May, this last memorial weekend, I went to the family log cabin. I love it there, since I can find and see so many cool things there! Mushrooms, insects, frogs, etc
Well, one day I was absent mindedly lookihg for bugs and wasnt having much luck because of the wet and cold weather. So I decided to try something new- rip open a wet rotting log. And im not sure why, but I saw ohe that just.. called to me. And looked ripe for the picking. So I bent down and tore apart this wet, decomposing tree stump. Suddenly, I saw what looked like a slug. So I pulled it out and low and behold- salamanders! In Minnesota! I had no idea they could live here! I soon found out they were "Blue spotted Salamanders"

So I took two home with me. I set up a home for them. A 10 gallon aquarium tank, with eco earth substaight, drift wood pieces, moss, a water dish, a mushroom statuem and un-chlorinated water. Unfortunately both pet stores I went to didnt have lids for 10 gallon tanks. So they lived like that for a few days. Until one escaped, never to be seen again! I had no idea that salamanders could walk up glass. I frantically search, but to no avail. I believe my cat probably ate it. So then I only had one left. I named him Vug

I named him that because his species is in a group called "mole salamanders". It was easy to make the connection to miners, since they are nicknamed moles. So then I began to look up early 1900s mining slang and came across "Vug". Which means- a small hole or crevice in rock, often surrounded by crystals. I thought it fit him well, since I found him hinding in tree stump/log.

I've had him for 3 months now and I love him so much. Everytime I look at him, I have to verbally say outloud : "I love him so much"
