EN ROUTE TO THE PLANT.....
Batman and Catwoman were weaving in and out of traffic as they raced to the facility, hoping
to reach in time. “Hmm.. Why did he mention the Joker??”, Batman pondered as he drove
faster. “Hmm?? What do you mean darling?”, Catwoman asked, scrambling to get her seat belt
on. “In the riddle, he mentioned the Joker as 'a mutual friend', being a second party in this
affair. But why implement him??” He pondered this to himself as he made a mad dash to the
Plant.
OUTSIDE OF THE PLANT......
Tires screeched to a halt as assault burns behind them, smoke raising from the skid marks as the
engine turned off from this ominous vehicle of fear. The hatch released and drew back, letting the
current duo out as they looked up and saw the once great plant, now in shambles as it looked
desolate and abandoned.
Catwoman got a chill as they could hear the faint sound of machinery whirring, the makings of
something sinister in the old in the rundown plant. Batman looked on and saw how badly Selena
was shaken up by this. He gently placed his hand on her shoulder and said: “Its not your fight Selena,
you don't have to continue with me on this gauntlet.” Selena then turned to the dark knight, smiled
at him and licked his cheek tenderly as she said: “I'm a big girl Batman, I've been in worse scraps
than this for food, let alone a crazy psychopath.” He gave her a bewildered look, hoping she was
joking with him as he saw her slinking slowly towards the front doors.
As they made it closer towards the building, they could hear the whirring of the machinery
getting louder and moving faster. “Batman, do you hear that??” Selena asked as they touched
the nob. “Yes.. They are speeding up the machinery. They're trying to get something down in a
hurry. But why??” He pondered as he studied the door, searching for weaknesses. He placed his
hands on the aged metal, feeling all of the bumps and scratches til he found a weak spot. After a
few seconds of searching, he found the right spot to strike at as he reached into his utility belt and
pulled out a small pack of explosives and placed them on the weak spot of the door. He took
Catwoman by the arm and pulled her behind a tree and said: “Duck!!” He then pressed a button
on the center of his belt and detonated the mini bomb, blowing the doors wide open as smoke
filled the doorway. As the smoke settled down and dust cleared, Batman got up from covering
himself and Catwoman in his cape as he saw the door opened. He graciously helped her up to her
feet as he looked inside the plant, seeing something sinister brewing in there. “Come on Selena!!
We have to hurry!!” He said as they rushed through the doorway into certain danger.
As they entered, the doors quickly closed behind them, locking them both in as the dimmed
lights flicked on and off above them. The whirring got louder and more complex as they walked
steadily closer towards the center of the build, seeing steam raising up from the heated vats of
chemicals, hearing the humming of the machines churning out deadly liquid for the purpose of
evil. The old building creaked and moaned as the vapors seeped through the cracks in the walls
and ceiling, making Catwoman grip Batman's arm tightly as they ventured further into the abyss
of fear. He smiled a little as his mind was still focused on stopping the sinister plot that the
Scarecrow had in the works, looking intently at the thick cloud of mist ahead of them, knowing
that he was just through there and so was his workforce.
The noise of machinery was at its loudest as they pasted through the wall of mist, being partially
blinded as they ducked behind a tall stack of crates and peeked out to get a glimpse of the situation.
As they watched, they saw a few workers, from what they could see, working diligently to produce
the fear toxin for their master. As one worker was handling a jar of the strange green ooze, his grip
gave way and the jar fell and shattered. The other workers stopped and looked at the man, cowering
as they knew something was about to happen. They all whispered among themselves: 'The fear..
It's going to take him.. The fear....' The man then fell on his knees, screaming in agony as his eyes
went black and veins turned the same color. He shut his eyes, trying not to see as he ran back to
his station and pleaded: “I'll be good. I'll be good!!! I wont make another mistake.. I promise!!!”
He instantly went back to work as his eyes and veins slowly turned back to normal. “My god.. What's
happened to them?” Batman said as he examined the poor man cowering at his work station. “A
miracle Batman..” A voice said as it softly echoed from the catwalks above them. “The miracle of
Fear..” “Scarecrow..” Batman said under his breath, squinting his eyes tightly as he looked up into
the shadows to find him. “What have you done to these poor people Crane?” Batman asked in a
concerned and harsh tone. “Its easy Batman, I have crossed over into a new world of fear.” Scarecrow
said as he started to cackle. “You see, I have a new way of releasing the fear toxic into people with
a far greater effect on the person's psyche. Being able to manipulate the brain patterns of the victim
to control what they see as fear.” He said as he slowly walked into the light to be seen. “How is that
possible?” Batman questioned. “With this...” Scarecrow smirked as he raised a vile of swirling bits
to his mask. “Nanites Batman.. Nanites are the new instruments in the age of terror!!” He laughed
maniacally. “You see, I send the nanites into the bloodstream through the serum. Then, they work
their way through the body to the brain and latch onto the brain cells. Once that is done, they start
to rework the mind to tell it what to fear and how to avert the pain. Its a marvelous way to study
fear in its raw form.” He said with a twisted and crooked smile. “And its all controlled from this
little remote.” He showed them as he switched it on.
As the device activated, a soft hum resonated from it, controlling the workers in the plant. Their
eyes went blank as they turned around from their stations and walked slowly towards Batman in a
zombified state, backing him into a corner. “You see Batman, I have caught you in zugzwang; and
its checkmate for you.” Crane said with a sinister tone. Batman backed himself into a corner, seeing
them walking ever closer as he spotted Catwoman climbing up towards Scarecrow as he was
preoccupied with Batman's demise. His eyes gleamed as he saw victory in sight as Catwoman sneaked
up behind him, clawing his hand as he dropped the remote behind the horde of people.
As Catwoman was struggling with Scarecrow above, Batman was faced with the workers still being
controlled as he saw the controller and leaped over the small band and dove for it. They tried to
grab him but missed as he fell on top of the remote, deactivating the nanites as the workers eyes
reverted to their original coloring and fell into a daze as they went unconscious.
Up above them, Catwoman was toying with Scarecrow with her whip, cracking it along the railing
to push him towards the intersection. “So, what are you gonna do now Raggedy Man? No more
people to poison with your influence.” Selena said as he backed him into a wall. Scarecrow smiled
a wicked grin as he reached on to his belt and said: “Maybe my dear woman, but there's always you!”
He grabbed a vile and chucked it straight at her face as he saw the shadow of the man who filled
his heart full of fear and snitched it from the air and threw it back at him. Scarecrow's eyes grew
in fright as he saw the vile break against his mask and the serum started to take its hold on him.
Shrieks of terror rung from the master of fear, being exposed to his own creation. “Ok Crane, Now
tell me who is behind this madness..” Batman said as he activated the device and triggered the
nanites inside of him. Scarecrow started to laugh lightly, taking off his mask and revealing a forced
smile. His lips opened gently as he whispered: “Where the men of evil reside, where the fate of
sanity is contested. When you find the jester's cap, you will find you are the fool.” After that little
speech, his smiled faded away and he went unconscious in seconds.
Catwoman shook her head as she turned from Crane and said: “Well that was informative.. What
does any of that mean??” “Arkham....” Batman said as sirens could be heard in the background.
As the police took Crane to Gotham General, Batman and Catwoman perched on the nearby
rooftop to discuss the clue. “Ok, Arkham? Why there?” Catwoman said as she looked over the edge
the roof to see what the situation was. “Its a madman's ultimate fortress; He wants the final fight
on his terms.” Batman said as he looked over the edge and saw Scarecrow being in put into an
ambulance and the victims being treated. “He??” Catwoman asked, looking at Batman. “Who's
he?” “The clue is in the riddle; 'When you find the jester's cap, you will find you are the fool.'”
“The jester... Joker!” She exclaimed, snapping her fingers, “But what does his 'cap' have to do
with it?” Batman looked out over the edge and said: “What's under the cap Selena?” “His mind?”
“Exactly! His plan involves me finding him through this sick mind game of wills.” Batman answered.
“But what about the fool part of the riddle?” She asked him. “Its a warning; he's saying that its a
trap, not to underestimate him.” He replied. After a moment of silence, Catwoman smiled and
then said: “So, we go to Arkham, storm the fortress, take out Joker and then we can retire to our
summer home together.” Batman cracked a small smile as he said: “Lets stop the Joker first,
then we'll talk.”
IN A DARKEN ROOM....
“Huh... huh... Ok, I did everything you wanted to get the Bat here. I'm done right?” a man said as
he was strapped to a chair and near a table, clothes tattered and ripped as he looked up and saw
his tormentor standing over him, overcast in shadow. “Oh my goodness!! Who strapped you to a
chair?!!? Harley!!!!! Why is this poor soul in a chair??” the Joker said, stepping into the light from
a single light bulb. “Be-cuz we didn't have any good barrels!” Harley yelled back to him from
another room. “Well isn't that a fine Howdy-do!! Outta the good barrels.” He said as he sighed
gently with his hand covering his eyes. “That's a shame, but our deal is done right? I can go?” The
man asked, almost pleadingly. “Tsk tsk tsk.. Oh Riddler, of course your free.” he said as he brushed
some dust off of his pressed suit. “After one, last, thing..” he said as he grinned wickedly, holding
on to Nygma's shoulders as he started to laugh, then it got louder, then more out of control as his
maniacal laugh was echoing throughout the halls of Arkham.
