Helena woke up Sunday morning starting to feel it in her body that she had spent a considerable amount of time with hard work or riding demanding courses and programmes the last 48 hours. Yet the most challenging dicipline remained. The cross country course was said to be a lengthy one, more than a mouthful and after having walked the entire course yesterday -with a little help from an ATV of course, Helena knew that today, many horses and riders would retire. Helena did not doubt Kikimora at all that the mare was more than fit to og through the course without faults, but Helena hoped a cup of coffee would at least wake her up a little before their turn. Luckily, Helena was also more than used to being roughened up with stressfull events, hard labor and mentally draining challenges after years upon years as host for The White December. Surely so long as she didnt do something awfully silly, Kikimora would cruise through the course and maybe even give them a top 10 placing. It was not unreasonable to think they still had a chance after looking at the scoreboards. However, Helena entered for two reasons only, to ensure their stable brand was getting a little extra advertisement, but primarily she entered to compete against herself and her stable hands back home. It was the best way to push herself a little longer, do the little extra that was required to remain on top and in lead. Back home they even had scoreboards on regular stable choirs. Helena giggled a little to herself thinking about the family back home while Kikimora looked around with her big, intelligent eyes.
After a decent warm up and a couple of practice jumps, Helena rode Kikimora into the starting box. Unlike a lot of horses, Kikimora stood perfectly still, obediently waiting for the stewards to count down to zero and give them the signal to og. Other horses often had to walk in and out of the starting box, jumping around in excitement, but Kikimora had her own ways. Helena swore the mare had a start button and a stop button. At the stewards signal, they were off with a flying start. Kikimora was excited. almost electric, rushing forward. Her ears moved back and forth like radars, pricking onto any plausible obstacle and asking Helena ‘’is it this one? This one? How about that one??’’. Helena grinned her face off, feeling how absolutely happy the mare was when finally the obstacles and questions appeared and she could finally use her legs and her head. Helena did her absolute best to balance the mare and give her the best angles to jump the various obstacles. Kikimora absolutely cruised during the longer stretched without obstacles, and Helena looked at her clock now and then to see how far along they had come compared to the optimal time. So far so good. The clock beeped every minute to notify Helena of the course markers she had set for herself and Kikimora, where they should be at each beep and also she could keep track of Kikimora’s heartbeat at the same time. Not that it was to much worry, Kikimora was as fit as she could be and the only way this course could be ruined was if Helena made a mistake Kikimora couldn’t fix alone.
