A LESSON IN SEARCH AND RESCUE - AVALANCHE RESCUE FOR BEGINNERS (AND PUPPIES!)

The mountains above Lillehammer, more precisely named ''Nordseter'', is home to red cross training facilities and the norwegian rescue dog organization! Every winter they host courses for voluntary staff and people who wants to train their dogs to become certified avalanche dogs. The area is a large fenced off hill with GPS trackers buried in the snow to mimic people burried underneath. The hill itself is also sloping in different angles at different places, creating a variety of challenges and requires different skill levels. The hill itself is however also entirely safe for avalanches, making it the perfect training facility, close enough to a realistic scenario witout ever having an actual threat of an avalanche.

ASSIGNMENT THREE

BURRIED ALIVE OR DIGGING FOR GPS TRACKERS?

TASK

The Red Cross and ''Norwegian Rescue Dogs'' have allowed participants from TWD to try out their facilities. There are two possible ''games'' your team may complete;
1. Finding the burried GPS trackers using your own tracker that will guide you closer using sound signals
2. Team up with someone and during strict supervision be burried alive underneath snow while your parnet (or puppy) attempts to find you and dig you back out

Even if your team dont fancy participating in the games, you may participate in theoretical lessons, watch the national rescue dogs have a cliniq where they perform or even join a ''puppy course'' for dogs that teach them how to dig in the snow to collect a reward such as a ball or a treat; mimicing how rescue dogs dig when they find people in the snow! Hot chockolate, coffee and tea will be served by a bunfire as well as some norwegian treats such as oranges, ''kvikk lunsj'' (the norwegian version of kitkats) and hot soup with dark bread.
