Description
This is the first part of a story adaptation project I did for my Environments & Characters class at the College for Creative Studies in the fall of 2018. I chose the book "The Phantom Tollbooth" by Norton Juster as my subject due to its lack of adaptations save one underrated 1970 live-action/animated feature directed by the legendary Chuck Jones (One of my favorite animation directors). My main focus on it was to redesign two of the major characters in the story, the young boy Milo and Tock the watchdog.Here you can see the full 3/4 view for Milo, three facial expressions, and the front, side and rear views of him. I based him mostly on a young, blonder version of myself, but I also took inspiration from other boy protagonists in animated films, like Hogarth in "The Iron Giant" and Cody in "The Rescuers Down Under".
First I drew these by hand on paper and then painstakingly inked and painted the drawings digitally on Photoshop. Notice how I used colored outlines to give the character a more professional animated look.
