Daphne Odjig

Acrylic paint on drywall
H4-2-153

This original artwork was painted by Daphne Odjig, an Anishinaabe artist recognized as one of the first and best of the Woodland School of artists. She and her colleagues in the "Indian Group of Seven" were inspired by indigenous religious imagery and the challenge of representing their Anishinaabe culture to others. Odjig was commissioned by the Museum to paint this mural commemorating Manitoba's Centennial at a time when native artists struggled for recognition in Art Galleries. Odjig used the opportunity to create this distinctive and brilliant painting of the role of the Anishinaabe hero, Nenabozhoo, in the creation of the known world.

A most impressive Aboriginal wall painting on what was originally the 180° turn past the Manitoba Museum 's Orientation Gallery, and in recent years has become its own historical and artistic alcove thereof

Notable iDevice11 pic taken during a return visit to said Museum one Saturday (1/20/2024).
