Back to my scholarly work, now I am working on the early Iron age.
This is the act of anointing someone as symbol of special election; the version most commonly known is the Biblical anointing by a prophet of an individual chosen by God.
Probably the most famous one is king David's anointment by the prophet Samuel as described on 1 Samuel 16:1-13.

Note that anointing is not an exclusive practice of Semitic peoples, as Hittites, Greeks and Egyptians also practiced as form of anointing.
