Description "[...] But now, for the first time, I see you are a man like me. I thought of your hand-grenades, of your bayonet, of your rifle; now I see your wife and your face and our fellowship. Forgive me, comrade. We always see it too late. Why do they never tell us that you are poor devils like us, that your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony ? Forgive me, comrade ; how could you be my enemy?"

Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet On The Western Front, Ch. 9

---------------------------------------

All Quiet On the Western Front is by far my favourite book ; it describes WWI from a german point of view, with a very strong style.

The characters of this drawing are two WWII men, american and german, while the book's scene relates a WWI german soldier trying to save the life of a french ennemy. This changing was just a graphic choice. Anyway this scene could happen during any war...

Incredible work, and the fact that you mention All Quiet on The Western Front makes it all the more poignant, for it is also a favorite of mine. Love the colors, the epressions, everything about this piece; beautiful and deeply moving.

Its amazing, however, i am afraid - not a true story
It wasnt and it wont be like that. Sucks...

atomicqueen In reply to DJAK0NDA [2011-09-15 07:44:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, there were stories of men on the battlefield who'd have conversations from opposite sides of the trenches. My uncle, who's in the army and is a huge WWI+WWII history buff, was adamant that some of the American and German forces had an hour or so of non-fighting when they weren't recieving any orders, and played soccer together.

That's a very thought-provoking thing, that as a soldier you are never shown photos of the other side and told "this is his mom, this is his kid sister" and so on. Very good!!
I also like All Quiet, a great book!
