Before His fall Barbatos was 5th in the rank of Tarshishim (Virtues), second rank of the second sphere of the heavenly hierarchy. However the chaos of the fall and the huge amount of infighting that followed presented an opportunity for many to gain power. The ranks that kept the demons organized in heaven meant nothing in hell as a result many of the ruling Seraphim were overthrown and a new form of government similar to a feudal system put in place. Barbatos was one of the lucky few; four of nine of the new rulers of hell were acquaintances of his who he had been loyal to while in heaven. As a result he later gained the rank of Grand Duke in the realm belonging to the former Seraph Bael and the command over 30 legions of her army.
