Description Dead Sea , Israel , 2012

Nikon D300 , Samyang 8mm Fisheye

Large and heavy deposits of salt , sinkholes , the deepest place on the Planet , end of the World.

The Dead Sea , also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordering Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. Its surface and shores are 423 metres (1,388 ft) below sea level, the lowest elevation on the Earth's surface on dry land. The Dead Sea is 377 m (1,237 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With 33.7% salinity, it is also one of the world's saltiest bodies of water, though Lake Assal (Djibouti), GarabogazkΓΆl and some hypersaline lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica (such as Don Juan Pond) have reported higher salinities. It is 8.6 times saltier than the ocean. This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which animals cannot flourish, hence its name. The Dead Sea is 67 kilometres (42 mi) long and 18 kilometres (11 mi) wide at its widest point.

I love your fish-eye work, I've seen nothing like it. The lines of salt really accent the curvature of the piece.

LOVELY!! Ive always wanted to visit the DEAD Sea. I studied microbes that are unique to the dead sea :3 some of the only things that live there. Tell me, is it true the Dead Sea is drying up?

DaniBabitz In reply to toffie-tiger [2012-05-15 08:25:29 +0000 UTC]

Hi ,
Thank you very much for your comment !
The answer it is yes and no .
Yes - because in the last years the level of the Sea it's down for few meters ; the process of evaporation it is very hard ( it is a very warm area ) ;
No - because the drying process it is natural and it is a cycle process - during the long history of this places the level it's up and down .
The Dead Sea received fresh (sweet) water from the underground (natural process ) .
It is an unique place in the world also for tourists and scientist , you'll be very welcome here !

ah I am do glad to hear that!
Last year I was reading somewhere that because of human activity the Dead Sea water levels were drastically reduced. But I was unsure if that was real or not Im glad to hear it wont be disappearing anytime soon! I really really want to go see it. is it true you float on it? or is that a myth?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DaniBabitz In reply to toffie-tiger [2012-05-15 08:40:22 +0000 UTC]

It is true ! You can float on your back and read the newspaper in the water (even on iPad!) .
The human industrial activity it is very hard in the area and of course, this it is not so good for this natural treasure ....
But , you know, the Nature it is always stronger than us !

toffie-tiger In reply to DaniBabitz [2012-05-15 08:46:12 +0000 UTC]

wow!!! I MUST GO SEE IT! its the one place Ive always wanted to go. I first knew about it in a picture/sticker book and you had to stick on pictures of pple floating on the water reading the news paper(just like you said) though I always wondered if that stick book was right about it ^^ but ever since then I always wanted to go there sounds like fun, I wonder what it feels like! Do you live near it?

>: ) and yes let NATURE concur!
