Description
The image of a wild horse speaks books to me. Let me tell you a little story about my first encounter with one...I remember the first time I’ve been to an all american rodeo together with my room-mate from Montana. I had not even the tiniest idea about horses, but found myself fascinated by the wild stallions and their strong will to throw anyone off their back no matter what. Without taking my eyes off a cowboy, who just hit the dusty ground pretty hard, I asked my friend: “Dude (that's what you say in California - at least I'm told so), how comes those horses don’t let anyone ride them? Did no one ever tame them?” His answer blew me away:
“They tried to! Those horses just turned out to have a will that can’t be broken. No one will ever be able to ride them, because they simply chose not to be ridden.”
Wow! Try to see this from the perspective of a horse for a moment: You grow up witnessing how every other horse around you gives up at some point and accepts it’s fate as riding-horse. Still you somehow decide to not let that happen to you. No matter how hard you get beaten, you know at the end of the day you’re stronger – that’s why you keep courageously throwing ‘em off. One after an other, until they finally give up.
I've experienced several times in my own life that evil literally flees from those who boldly resist it.
Life is only fun, if it is approached in a courageous, almost curious exploration of the unknown. In this painting I wanted to express this wild freedom of life we're all called to.
What does it speak to you? I hope it makes you dream about breaking out of the chains of average and stirs up a hunger for going after your dreams.
TECHNICAL ASPECTS:
I painted this work in photoshop CS5 extended, using a bamboo wacom pen&touch tablet. It's all painted by hand using several reference photos for basic horse figure and elements of 1 stock image on parts of the fog. This is actually the first digital painting I've completed, since I'm still very new to this medium. Constructive feedback is welcomed!

Thanks for the follow and love, tleach!
I've always had this weird thing going on where I'd see beautiful scenes before my inner eye. Just recently have I started trying to put these on canvas and it's super fun. I love well-done photography! Many of my friends are photographers.

You're very welcome!! I have to admit a bit of envy that you can do that--I have tried my hand at trying to draw or paint and it's just...not good. So I very much respect your talent for it, anyone can pick up a camera and get good at it technically (even though the best ones already have that artistic talent for it), but it takes a real talent in your bones to be able to create something on paper or canvas.

Do you speak German or was that Google translator?! haha
Well, vielen Dank.

Good descision about focusing on art by the way. You're good at it!

Hey DragonDew. Thanks for stopping by! I feel honored, since you seem to be the master of digital art. Just saw your detail painting and am blown away by the lighting! Was that done in 3D or Photoshop?

Oh thanks very much, that's quite a compliment but no...I'm no master and there are so many amazing artists on here that I feel humbled by them!
I did traditional paintings before joining DA and then was so inspired by the art I saw on here that I got photoshop and later a wacom bamboo fun tablet. I've only been doing digital for about 2 years now and every deviation is a learning process. So much fun though! And so much easier to fix any mistakes!

I totally agree. It's so much easier to go at the empty canvas with the undo-option in mind

Thanks jenzanimo, capturing the atmosphere was my main concern with this. I tended to want to put more detail into it and literally had to force myself to leave it with a specific "roughness" for the sake of the atmosphere.
Your work just made me smile, fun stuff!

Haha thanks, I'm glad you like it! It's like anything out there: if you just spend enough time with it and learn how to make it support your creativity it'll allow you to produce great stuff! I've even seen someone do incredible portraits with salt... lol
What I love about digital art is the ability to work with different layers. This way I can work on elements in the foreground without affecting the background. I feel less limited in my creativity, because I can undo everything. This allows me to just go at the empty canvas and see what develops with no fear!
Are you a photographer?

I spend all my time at photography and a few hobbies so I wont let myself venture into new territory. I take pictures for a hobby only and family if they want something in particular. Its fun for me and my cousin in germany is heavy into it.

That's great! Good that you're focusing on one thing only. I oftentimes got caught up in too many projects at the same time. FOCUS is the theme of the hour for me, too!
