Description
My first carving for 2020. This piece is finally finished. The main carving is on Redwood. The snake is Cedar. This piece is about 36" high X 18" at the widest point. It takes me longer these days to complete a carving because, during the winter, I am at the shop only 4 days a week, about 5 hours a day. Otherwise, I'm playing.
Thanks for viewing.

Thank you very much, my Friend. This carving has been an interesting adventure and learning experience. I think I carved and re-carved the scales about half a dozen times. That was probably the most challenging. The rest was just a matter of 'flow.'
Thanks again, buddy.

does the snake keep getting smaller & smaller with each re-do of scales?

Oh yeah. Any change always affects the entire carving. I work lightly when I'm not sure about what I'm doing.

Mind-blowing detail and such a natural composition.
My hat's off to you. It's all I can do to muster a couple of hours of concentration these days.

You are very kind, Sir. I can relate to the stress on concentration. I'm not a patient person, I can't remember sh@#, and I'm not really known for my skills in relationship to concentration. When I carve I basically go into a slightly altered state of mind (kind of like day dreaming) where time is basically meaningless; so, I am able to 'bypass' my own impatience.
I know other carvers who are very meticulous and plan and draw everything out before ever touching the wood. I am unable to work in that capacity. Spontaneity is basically my only guide.

Sometimes when I write, I go into a sort of fugue state and when I come up for air, the results are a bit of a surprise. Lately, it's gotten harder to get to that state; too many distractions. I'm supposed to start a new job; we'll see if having that structure helps me concentrate better in my free time.
