Premium Members can now use Google Analytics to get meaningful insight about the traffic to their deviantART Profile! Using our new Google Analytics integration, you can access comprehensive statistics about your audience, traffic, and art.
Get Deeper Insight Into Your deviantART Traffic
By enabling the feature on your profile, you can now use Google Analytics to get a better grasp on the deviantART experience that you’ve created for your audience!
- Understand what types of people are organically drawn to your work. Where do they live? How long are they on your page?
- See the impact of the marketing you do outside of deviantART. When you share your deviantART work and links in other networks and sites, you’ll be able to track the traffic back to your Journals, Gallery, Profile, and much more!
- Understand what your visitors are looking at when they’re on your Profile and even for how long! Sometimes visitor trends are unclear until you can see the bigger picture.
- Evaluate the difference in attention you get for some types of work versus others.
- See a direct correlation between your marketing activities to deviation submissions and spikes in traffic to your Journals, artwork, or Profile pages.
Learn More About Your Audience Knowing who is engaging with your Profile can help you make decisions about where to hang out, what Groups to join, and other things you might want to share with your audience.
Watch Realtime Activity Flow To Your Profile
Google's realtime reports allow you to sit back and watch activity happening on your content right this second.
View Traffic Stats For Your Content
Google Analytics allows you to dive into traffic stats for deviations, Journals, Galleries, Collections, and other areas of your Profile Page. See which deviations are the most popular today and find out where that traffic is coming from.
Track and Analyze Your Watches and Favourites
Our Google Analytics integration tracks when someone watches or adds your artwork to their favourites, allowing you to view charts and statistics of these events. How many favourites did Reddit traffic give you this week? How many new watchers did you gain last weekend after submitting your newest deviation? Did you gain more watchers this month or last month?
Favourites and Watches are available under Google Analytics' "Events" reports.
...And A Ton Of Other Reports
Here's just a sample of some of the stats you can see:
- Traffic charts, graphs, and statistics by date
- Traffic demographics (geographic locations, languages...)
- Visitor stats (new visitors, returning visitors, time spent on pages, number of pages viewed, bounce rates...)
- Top sites and social networks sending you traffic and, for some social networks, the individual posts that are linking to your content
- Search engine keywords people are using to find your Profile Page and content
Measure How Your Activity Impacts Your Audience Growth
Google Analytics can help you make decisions on how you manage your deviations. It can also allow you to see the impact of your on site activities.
- If you find that your audience is more active on certain days or times, you’ll be able to determine a schedule for posting new art or Journals.
- Perhaps you’ll find that the more you comment, the more you see your pageviews and watch list jump.
- If commenting, and critiquing others’ artwork for example, helps increase the level of activity on your Profile, perhaps you’ll decide to do this more frequently.

I agree, though I also see this as the users responsibility (and yes, I'm aware that most simply don't care or can't be bothered to concern themselves with "nerdy"-stuff like that *sighs*)
There is a very easy way to opt-out of this though, block all the necessary scripts with browser-addons like "NoScript" or the likes.
And yes, it's very sad that there are no open-source alternatives provided.

I suspect that I could get one to run -- their HTML filtering is Otnay eryvay oodgay. Shh, don't tell them, I don't think they can read pig latin.
I'd like to see them buy a license for TinEye, and use it on uploads. I think it'd help a lot on drama.

Not everybody understands this kind of stuff. For example, it's the first time I hear about "NoScript" and I don't know what it does. Maybe it's easy for you, for others it's not.

A car isn't easy for me, I couldn't repair it. But when I notice something is wrong (and the NSA scandal was kind of a big deal, wasn't it? ) I ask someone who does

It's not about friends, actually. If none of them knows such things, I have to ask a professional and pay for the work. (Given you care about your very own privacy )
I absolutely understand that many people have no further interest in computers, how they work, what a Byte is, how a pre-processor works etc. That's fine with me. There is no reason for everyone to know everything. I don't either *g*
Look, I'm not trying to offend anyone here, but given all the scandals of the past and all the "conspiracy theories" that actually turned out to be quite true, I really think people should care, unless they want history to repeat itself. There should be an awareness by now, but people are kind of lazy and still don't mind or have a "I don't have anything to hide"-attitude, which is really scary, if you ask me.
I didn't explain what "NoScript" was, because the result is just one search away
But basically "NoScript" is an addon for Firefox which blocks JavaScript, Flash and other technologies that can be used to track you. You can give permissions on a site-per-site basis so your favorite sites work like they should, but tracking-sites don't.

I understand your point. But maybe this applies in some countries only. In others, people don't have enough money to pay their rent, what about computer specialists for "anti-spy" help.
And if you look at facebook, how people expose their personal data absolutely willingly, there's no wonder why they wouldn't consider protecting themselves.

Apart from what I said: If you can't pay an expert, but are aware of the problem, you can still sit down and get the knowledge yourself. You don't need to know much about computers, to keep up your privacy in the internet, it's more often than less simple and non-techie things that make the real difference here.
For example asking yourself if you really want to share this information.
Another thing would be extensions for your browser (or even settings you could change) that enhance your privacy a lot. Like not allowing third-party-cookies etc. These are things that are not really complicated and if you care, anyone can learn about them.
If you simply don't care (although you know about the risks), well, then there is nothing to do.

I guess people simply are not aware of the consequences of their actions.
Many people don't think before they write something on the internet. The inhibition threshold is much lower here.
But if they don't get the job of their dreams because a few years ago they said something the company doesn't want to get linked to, they learn.
Sadly not before *sighs*
I've never been on Facebook and never will. I joined another "Social network" before, but I tend to keep my social contacts to real-life and specialized platforms such as dA.

That's true. I don't understand why people complain so much about "what a potential employer could see on my facebook". If they simply limit the people that can view their profile, the problem is gone.
Or maybe I understand - people are vanity creatures, they want the whole world to see them and to hear their opinion!

Depends on the future employer. In a perfect world, that would be true, but I personally don't trust any of these companies not to share very detailed personal info for money.
So, if I wanted to say something, I would say it in person.
On the other hand, I was not speaking about: "Company X sucks" and then two years later you apply for a job, but rather a general statement like "Communism isn't that bad at all!" (bad example) that goes against the company's attitude.
There is so much data nobody has an idea what it can be used for.

Yes, I realized what you wanted to say. Nobody speaks about random companies with no connection to himself (unless they are extremely popular). But in that case, if he had bad opinion about these companies, he wouldn't want to work for them.
Anyway, I think that very few private companies have the funds and the willing to pay to websites like facebook just to see eventually the birthday photos of a potential employee. The chance to find something important on his/her profile is very small.
And in case you're applying for a very high ranking and important position, which would require such a check, you should be careful what you talk in person too, not just online.

Naesthiel In reply to 4u64ica [2014-03-27 09:27:23 +0000 UTC]
From my personal experience, (still) most people tend to be careful about what and to whom they talk in person, but they don't really grasp the internet. (no offense meant to anybody!)
Especially since the NSA-affair I really hoped more people would care about their privacy, but they simply don't. A huge amount of people loves to share personal info (me too, to some extent), make new contacts or even friends. But people forget that these companies don't act out of pure altruism. Nobody wants to pay, but if something is free, you're likely to be the product
Anyway, I think we are losing the main thread here. For people that do _really_ care, there are always ways to protect themselves (nobody has to be the absolute defenseless victim, when it comes to techie-stuff ). I'm always trying to help those who don't have a technical background and there are many more people out there, that do just this.
The one thing is, that people need to be made aware that there are risks (without a technical background many things seem like voodoo and yes, some things are exaggerated *puts on a tinfoil hat himself*), before they can decide to act. Then they can ask for (even free) help, regarding technical solutions.
The major thing still is to use your brain and use it wisely. No need to have the same opinion as anybody else, but thinking about the matter and deciding what's best for you. I decided, that I don't want no google-analytics be able to track me, or any other service.
(I still don't see _ANY_ benefit _FOR ME_, when WebsiteXY tracks me through half my history and knows that at 10:23 I was on dA and then minutes later on an university website, while at half past eleven I bought a book at some internet-shop...)
That's where I tend to be somewhat "egoistic". If there is no benefit for me, I don't want to be tracked, and for me, there is none, ever.
Regarding google analytics here. I don't have no problem with general, anonymous and significant analytics. I do fully understand that people want to know what their audience is like.
Still I would absolutely prefer an open source solution that I can tinker with and where I know the insides

Ah, I figured it out. It takes a little bit of bouncing around.
Click the "Get started" link
Click the "Google analytics" link
Click on - "Access Google Analytics" link (upper right)
Enter a name for your page and your DA pages url
Copy tracking number > Go back to DA > Go to "settings" > Enter tracking number save. Done.
You can uncheck all the data info in the pop up.
Everyone seems to be jumping to conclutions about DA & Google. I don't think this is the case as you can set this up for just about any web page. I believe this is just DA allowing it now. It's not youtube all over again. You need to have a DA membership to use the Analytics not the other way around, like needing Google + to use Youtube.

Google analytics was one program I kept logging in a couple months ago and seeing the screen freeze and lock up my entire computer.
Each time I complained about it, I got a run around from the techs that it must be something else that I had running that was causing it.
yeah yeah sure sure.
I stopped mentioning when there are issues anymore. If dA wants something to go down, then they will be like yahoo and obstinately ignore all common sense. Now everyone is like "What's yahoo? Oh, yeah, that's that crummy website that used to be kinda cool, right?"
