Description
Vernon and Jay had had their fun, handing out candy to the trick-or-treaters that came knocking at their door. Now it was their turn. They had figured out a path they could follow, going to each of their friends houses to reverse trick or treat: meaning that they would deliver shedu-related snacks. Not that they didn't have friends that weren't into shedus...wait actually no they didn't. It turns out that their circle overlapped pretty closely with people in the shedu world. They were accompanied by their shedus, Antares and Symphony. The two classic heavies had been getting along well, and last time the handlers had checked, they were outside playing in the garden. They went out to call their shedus, only to be greeted by two bumbling cubs.Jay stood in shock, jaw dangling as he looked at a clone of his beloved companion, just smaller. "It's crazy, this one looks exactly like Symphony did when she was a cub." He tilted his head, looking at the shedu closer. It had the exact same markings, and apparently responded to his voice in the same way.
Vernon recovered faster from the shock and was the first to reach the conclusion. "Someone baby-fied our shedus."
The two handlers grabbed their cubs by the scruff and carried them gently inside while they tried to figure out what happened. The conclusion that they reached was that it was some sort of Halloween shenanigans, and that there was nothing they could do about it. After all, neither of them were mad scientists that could figure this out, and to be fair, they did kind of miss the cub phase.
Vernon and Jay watched as their cubs tumbled around on the ground, forgetting how to use their limbs and unused to the new proportions of their bodies. The two handlers turned to each other and started to confer.
"What should we do," Jay asked. "Should we skip our reverse trick-or-treating?"
Vernon thought for a moment, then shook his head. "I think we'll still be able to take them along, don't you think?"
Jay cast a glance at the two cubs, then shrugged. "Let's give it a shot!"
After slipping on their jackets and putting a lead on each of the cubs, the two handlers stepped out of the house and into the outside. The night was definitely nippy, but not too cold thankfully. While the shedus seemed to remember basic commands, they once again had the attention span of a young cub. It was difficult to wrangle the two as well as the basket of shedu goodies they had for their friends. They started to walk, the young cubs slowly starting to follow along with the lead. They got to the first house, and one of their handler friends opened the door. As soon as she saw the cubs tugging at the end of the leads, she burst into laughter.
"Oh I see you're having the same problem." She opened the door slightly more, showing a puppy play pen containing a large shedu cub who was chewing on the bars, hoping to get out.
"I'm not entirely sure what happened, but I think it'll go away after midnight. It seems almost like a fairy tale, right? Don't feed the gremlins before midnight or something." The handler chuckled and gratefully accepted the gifts from Vernon and Jay before bidding them goodnight and closing the door.
"Well, that was weird," Jay expressed, looking at Symphony who was now trying to catch the last leaf on the tip of a stick.
Vernon laughed, teasing Antares with a similar leaf that he found on the sidewalk, his heart filling with happy memories as he remembered Antares as a cub. The cub and teenage years were painful, sure, but they were filled with a blissful innocence that was hard to find these days.
The four individuals moved onto the next house, but on the way there, the cubs got tangled around each other. Jay put down the basket and unclipped the leads, only to find that Symphony and Antares had actually already chewed through most of them. He sighed and shook his head, holding the ruined leads up for Vernon to see.
Without hesitating, Vernon grabbed the cubs and tossed them gently into the basket, before picking it up. "Let's see if our next friend will let us borrow some leads."
They quickly made it to their friend's well decorated house. Under the glowing moon, it definitely looked like a haunted house. Jay rang the doorbell, and quickly got some leads and exchanged them for some shedu goodies, all while thanking his friend profusely. By this time, the two cubs were swatting at each other, angry that they had to share such a small space.
"Well, that's an odd start to the night, I wonder how long this is going to last."
