Description
There are a lot of episodes that can be considered bad from the show South Park. Some universally hated like Mr. Garrison’s Fancy New Vagina. However, there’s a lot of episodes people personally find bad while others consider said episode to be good. One of the episodes that I personally found bad growing up was Tonsil trouble while other people seem to think that this episode was fine. Honestly, I haven’t seen this episode in years and with my new style of reviewing shows, this is the perfect opportunity to see if it was fair of me to call this episode bad. So with that said let’s take a look at the episode Tonsil trouble.
Alright, so the episode starts off pretty promising because it not only sets up the main plot but it also parodies what you'd see in a wholesome family sitcom from the 70s. And it's followed with a hilarious tone shift when the hospital reveals that they gave Cartman aids because they accidentally give him blood that contained the HIV virus. Why hasn’t Cartman sued the crap out of the hospital is beyond me. So at school, the news was told to the boys and Kyle finds Cartman’s situation hilarious. Okay, I’m going to get this out of the way now, Kyle really kills the episode for me. I’ll go into further detail later. Anyway, I understand what this episode was trying to do and did it well. It was making fun of diseases by treating it like fashion trends.
Waitress: I'm afraid AIDS benefits aren't as popular as they used to be. AIDS was more the '80s/'90s disease. It's all about cancer now.
Cartman: Well that's just great! Of all the times to get AIDS, I get it right when everyone stops givin' a crap!
Hell, even today I feel like people are paying more attention to CVOID-19 as opposed to cancer. Now we get insight on why I dislike Kyle in this episode. After Cartman failed Aids benefit, Kyle laughed at him again and the explanation we got was…
Stan: He does feel bad for you, Cartman; he just thinks it's... ironic.
Cartman: Ironic how?
Stan: Well, you know, you're always such a dick and stuff, and, and now...
Cartman: Oh, and what?! I deserve it?! Is that what you think?!
Stan: Not me! That's, uh, kinda what he thinks.
Honestly, I don’t think that justifies Kyle’s behavior. Kyle is basically the character with the moral high ground. I understand that Kyle hates Cartman but I don’t think it’s good to laugh at someone who has a deadly disease enemy or not. And yes if the situation reversed why it’ll be more believable but I still wouldn’t approve of it. It’s just the principle of the matter to me. To quote unquote teach Kyle a lesson, Cartman breaks into his room and put his blood in his mouth giving him HIV via blood transfusion. I don’t really mind at all considering Kyle did a similar thing to Cartman in the episode “Ginger Kids”. After finding this out Kyle puts two and two together and confronts Cartman.
Kyle: Why do I have HIV?!
Cartman: Oh, you have HIV, huh Kyle? Guess it isn't so funny now, is it?
Alright, I’m going to get some hate for this but I actually side with Cartman for this one. Once again it’s the principle of the matter to me; the ends clearly don’t justify the means but hey what did you think was going to happen when you piss off a conniving sociopath. Kyle attacks Cartman and to be fair it was a reasonable reaction to what Cartman did to him. Another funny moment in this episode was in the principal’s office because they treated Cartman giving Kyle aids as an act of classroom pettiness. And it also kind of goes to the theme of the episode of how people don’t see AIDs as big of a deal as opposed to other diseases. So to calm Kyle’s unbridled rage he proceeds to break all of Cartman’s possessions. Before Kyle breaks his Xbox Cartman tells him they could talk to Magic Johnson they’d give them an idea of how to cure AIDS. So the two travel to Los angles and had to lie about having cancer in order to get free tickets. When they arrived at Magic johnson's mansion and its follows by probably my favorite line in the episode.
Butler: Magic. Magic, could you come to the front for a minute? There are a couple of boys here to see you. Two brave little buddies who against all odds have journeyed across America to find the cure for AIDS. All they have are each other in a race against time.
(Magic sheds a tear)
Unfortunately, it’s followed by the worst moment in the episode.
Magic: You boys both have the virus? Are you sure?
Cartman: We're not just sure, we're HIV-positive.
Kyle: WHAT PART OF BEING INFECTED WITH A DEADLY DISEASE DO YOU FIND FUNNY?!
Cartman: I don't think it's funny, Kyle.
Kyle: THEN STOP SAYING YOU'RE NOT JUST SURE, YOU'RE HIV POSITIVE!! THIS ISN'T FUNNY, AIDS ISN'T FUNNY, DYING ISN'T FUNNY, SO SHUT THE FUCK UP!
You clearly had no problem laughing at Cartman when he was the only one with HIV. You’d be lying to me if you don’t find this a little if not COMPLETELY HYPOCRITICAL on Kyle’s part. I’ll say this again it’s the principle on the matter. And plus it’s kinda backing up the point that Cartman was trying to make earlier. So while exploring Magic Johnson’s house it’s revealed that he sleeps with all of his money every night. At the Aids research center, it turns out that money is the cure for aids. I want to quickly point out I didn’t like this joke.
(A guy pulls up in a car in front of a village in Nigeria, Africa)
Driver: Hey! They just found the cure for AIDS! You just have to inject yourself with all your cash! Woohoo!
I don’t like that joke because it’s inaccurate. Even back in 2008, Nigeria wasn't necessarily a poor country with no money whatsoever. I feel like the writers choose a random country in Africa without doing research for the sake of accuracy. Anyway, the episode ends with another funny gag with Jimmy Buffet and this line.
Cartman: Well I'll tell you this, Kyle. I'm never gettin' my tonsils out again, hahahaha.
Kyle: I'm still breaking your Xbox.
Come on Kyle, don’t be a dick and honor the deal.
Okay so that was Tonsil Trouble and after watching this again, this is a pretty good episode. But it's time to give this a grade of overall quality. This episode has it all.
The good: It perfectly satirizes disease being nothing but trends, this episode acts as a good parody of the movie the cure. And this episode is riddled with hilarious jokes and moments.
The bad: The only issue I have with this episode is Kyle. I find him rude, mean spirited, and hypocritical. But since it doesn’t necessarily hurt the plot or message it could be forgiven.
So with all of that said I’m going to give this episode…
Final Grade: B+
I guess opinions can change over time and I’m not sure I’m HIV positive.
