She's wearing something of a kimono - or rather a kimono-like garment, since the shape is different - because the chat kind of unanimously agreed an oiran-like aesthetic fit the themes of the AU. Oiran are/were a type of extremely high ranking prostitute in Japan, prior to the practice being outlawed in the 1950s, that were known for their highly ornate manner of dress (especially in comparison to geisha), their extreme cost of service, their ability to reject potential customers, their skill in the arts, and their supposed ability to "topple castles" with their wit and charm. The sleeve of her robe is meant to emulate the obi knot of a tayu (highest ranking oiran).

The basic premise is that the Root is a parasitic being that seduces wyrms into creating great civilizations for the root to feed on, in a similar manner to the Radiance's infection, only it's her manner of persisting rather than a reaction to a slight (as in, it's unprovoked).

I'd go into more detail but the whole thing is super dark, especially if I were to get into the vessels, but yeah that's the gist of it.
