Description
The rattle of pills striking the floor,A splash in the river reaching the shore,
The groan of a rope with a new weight,
A cry out for help that comes too late,
The crack of a gunshot deep in the night,
A family broken apart by the fight,
The smash of a crash in summer air,
The scream of a siren with no time to spare,
No sleep can come there are no dreams,
Only nightmares and terrors these nights it seems,
You're drowning in water so deep and so dark,
It's heavy and cold and loaded with sharks,
Your family can't believe it they don't understand,
If you were drowning why didn't you reach out your hand,
They could not know, they just couldn't see,
You needed that arm to swim just to breath,
But you were just to tired alone in the dark,
And your light finally burned out with a spark,
So now slightly separate and rigid I stand,
Tears in my eyes and bugle in hand,
For there is no celebration, no dancing no band,
No more bonfires or beers in the sand,
And as these sad notes fade off in the sky,
I can't help but miss you with this last goodbye,
You were my best friend and I still couldn't see,
How heavy your burden and how deep your need,
You're gone forever now this short life too long,
And all I can give you is this sullen song,
Of somber rememberance, and quiet remorse,
For there is no altering history's course,
You were not the first, and won't be the last,
I'll stand here in this same spot again way to fast,
With crying widows and daughters and sons,
With the marching of soldiers and the firing of guns,
The flag gently waving over new caskets each day,
Goodbye brother, sister, I wish you had stayed.
