Description
After years of doing the same old comic art, those paintings I did a few months ago got me thinking I could really make it work. I thought "What better way to test out my skills than trying to make some updated artwork for my favorite game, League of Legends."I decided finally on my favorite Terror of the Void, Cho'Gath, as his classic artwork is one of the oldest in the game, and sadly...not very flattering of the champion, in my opinion. I first had to find some turn-arounds of the in-game model, as the splash barely shows much of him at all (Reference of it here: [link] ) Made a few rough sketches before I got one I liked. 15+ hours in Photoshop later, here we are!
I learned a heck of a lot working on this (Chiefest of all being remember to expand the sketch to full resolution before you paint, apologies for the low rez finish here.) but I'm really happy with the end results, and I can't wait to start the next one. Hopefully you guys agree, and I can promise it'll only get better from here!
Drawn & Painted by me, Cho'Gath is the property of Riot Games.

I think it's amazingly beautiful and i agree on what you're saying: there are only a few nice pics of this interesting champion. That's why I've used your art at my blog when I was talking about him. I think I gave you credit properly, you can see it here:Β moizell.com/league-of-legends/
Can you let me know if I didn't do it properly?
Keep going!

Very terrifying, dark and most of all,Β gorgeous.
I find it rather amazing how you can do this (and the details on the back) with a picture that barely shows much of these parts, making him more difficult to draw him since you can't get good refs on him.
Anyway, very wonderful, I like it, shows REAL terror.

Haha, well in that sense, I kinda cheated.
On LoLPro, they have a model viewer where you can see the character's in-game model from literally any angle. Β That helped more than anything, but yeah, after that it was mostly just making stuff up to look more modern. Β Thanks for the comment though!

Crit: Can't say that I've played LoL, so all of my remarks on anatomy would be useless. However, it might be wise to add in just a small amount of tunnel around the borders, so that the tail is not sitting right on the edge of the picture. I might be wrong about this, but some of the lighting on its body doesn't make sense, particularly up near the top pincers. I would expect it to be darkest at the middle; same goes for his headpiece. It could create a cool effect where all you see is glowing eyes.
Gush: Damn, nice work on the texture of his armor plating. This might be overlooked by others, but the mouth of that tunnel is also well done. (PS - I got really sad when I realized that this picture wasn't from Heart of the Swarm hahaha ) Superb work.

Haha, it's funny you mention that last bit, the concept artist I was inspired by to do this worked on SC2 concept work.Β
Thanks for the in-depth crit, I was intentionally making a few light sources non-sensical to show him off a bit more, though it does detract ever-so-slightly from the whole thing. Β It's something I'm already working to improve upon in the next one.

The shapes, blending and textures on the body turned out all kinds of gorgeous, as did the lighting in there. Some really fine work with all of the light-sources and it's a damn-good style to keep around!
Here's hoping this one gets around as it deserves and that the next one proves to be even MORE fun to make happen!
