Second submission of the new year and it's a reference sheet of my favorite "How to Train Your Dragon" OC, Darkrai. I'm surprised how much I've developed him since I drew him as a Darkrai (the pokemon) turned into a Night Fury for a parody or AU. Now he's completely his own, only slightly resembling the pokemon he was based off of in appearance.
Below is basic information for both the Tumblr blog for "Ask Darkai" and an updated version of information for all you viewers if you want to read it.
Name: Darkrai
Nicknames and aliases: Darky (unofficial nickname, only Megara has called him this without painful consequences), The One-Eyed Night Fury, One-Eyed Devil, King of Darkness, Apprentice (by his old master)
Age: 21 (a year older than Toothless)
Gender: Male
Rider: Megara
Personality: Distrusting of dragons and humans alike (male humans especially) with an even temper. He can tolerate quite a bit of stupidity but has his limits, only showing unwavering patience toward his rider. He has snapped at her and even hit her with his tail a few times for her moments of slowness but has never intentionally harmed these days. Once someone gets past Darkrai's cold front however, his prideful demeanor can be looked past into the wise dragon who has seen much in his long life and he will gladly share stories of his adventures. He may even become a valuable ally in times of need.
Wing span: 50 ft in length (since in the movies and show all they had to go on was Toothless who is still growing apparently, I like to think Night Fury wings can be larger. Darkrai's are an example in the size comparison sheet)
Attributes: Everything else said about all Night Furies in terms of speed and such
History: Darkrai was once a Night Fury like any other, eyes the greenish yellow with black pupils and lighter black scales. He grew up in a flight of different breeds of dragons but never met another Night Fury until one blacker than the shadows of a cave appeared and offered to teach Darkrai the ways of being a Night Fury. It was during training that Darkrai was given his name, unsure at the time of its meaning but he never got rid of it even after.
What is known of Darkrai's time as an apprentice is mostly hidden but it was later revealed he has made many enemies, including an odd creature that was the cross between a dragon and a boat as well as the possibly last dragon of a breed known as Mech dragons. As of now Darkrai refuses to give details of this area of his life, not even to Meg, and when asked if he regrets what he did his voice tends to darken as he outright claims he does not regret his actions. Nor will he ever. Evidence of his honesty are yet unknown.
After his time with his master, Darkrai ended up in Greece as a challenger in their sport "Dragon Fights" (which, as I have said many times, is canon to the HTTYD book series. See "How to Speak Dragonese" for their version) and in a fight with a Changewing was hit with acid which melted the right side of his face from the eye to his upper lip. While distracted with the pain the Changewing then made a slash but hit the quick healing wound, causing claw marks over the acid burn which was apparently not deep enough to cause internal damage.
While in the fights it is rumored that Darkrai had civilized contact with several other fighters but no more than that (he never saw anyone as his friend before Meg changed his mind) and even more rumors that he became involved with one fighter in particular. The name 'Freya' seems to spark something but he then quickly will look away and demand why the one who mentioned the name was talking to him of the Vikings' goddess of love and fire.
It is unknown when exactly he met Meg but she was 17 at the time. Like with all humans, Darkrai despised her and whenever she talked to him when she had finished her care of the dragons, for the longest time he would ignore her. Eventually however, her oddly polite and fascinated manner interested him and he studied her just as closely as she him. Until one night, Darkrai saved Meg's life as well as another thing of hers and they escaped Greece from the air. Details of their escape have been left out for some reason by Darkrai, perhaps he thinks Megara can tell the story better.
So, now who really knows what Darkrai and Meg do. It was said that they traveled everywhere, engaging in new adventures and even making friends. It's even rumored they met and befriended the great "Dragon Master", Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, and his own mighty Night Fury Toothless. Of course, none of this has been confirmed either. Yet.
