Description
Sujin, despite being the eldest child, is sometimes seen but usually not heard. While her younger siblings Mei and Shuren are seen as ambitious and "knowing what they want", Sujin is often seen as clueless and uninterested in pursuing a more meaningful life... Which is really harsh given that if it wasn't for Sujin's efforts, the family tavern wouldn't be where it is at now. Her mother, father, and aunt, while having good intentions, are often too focused on their own specialized area of maintaining the business that they forget about other things like maintenance, keeping things in stock, and insuring that no patron left dissatisfied; all things Sujin took care of even at an early age on top of nearly raising her own siblings. Of course, such blindspots are part of the reason why Sujin is in a big bind in the first place.
Sujin's father Jian (who is in this picture) is technically the owner of the tavern and is the head chief of the kitchen. His wife An manages the finances while his Jia takes care of the lodging. Because of this, Jian was able to focus on his passion of cooking and serving up some of the best comfort foods for a lot of the tavern's clientile, which was often merchants, travelers from other lands, and pirates who all wanted to enjoy taste Jade Ursine cooking without going to far into the mainland. Unfortunately, Jian, despite loving and only wanting the best for his children, often has a miserable time communicating with them due to be too businesslike with everyone. And frankly just singing some papers for his son that would improve the business only put him into more trouble.
Sujin, being somewhat close to her father than anyone else, decides to take note of some of the "finer details" of the paper signed. To her shock, she realizes that her father has pretty much given nearly all rights of the tavern to her brother.
There's a good reason she's concerned. While she did expect that one of the kids would eventually own the tavern, she hoped that it wouldn't be her brother because he has plans that could either jeopardize the business or put their lives in danger. Shuren has a plan to add a craft brewery to the business, which at first sounds great, but his plans are to use some of the latest brewing technologies that nobody else has used. Where as other local breweries rely on either coal or oil burning systems, Shuren wants to use the recently discovered power crystals to power everything. While these crystals do burn much cleaner and have a lot power, they're extremely volatile and could possibly destroy half of the city block! And if that life-threatening danger wasn't enough, there's also the steep costs they'd have to account for, meaning all the prices for food, drinks, and lodging would have to go up, driving away much of the crowd who favors this place...
Unfortunately, most of the family thinks Shuren is going in the right direction with it all... But can Sujin convince her father that such a risk is really worth it? Or perhaps is it just time for Sujin to spill out the truth of her feelings and tell her father that a life at sea is what she's planning to do since the family doesn't need her anymore?
...
Yes that is a massive description, but I was challenged by one of my friends to take one of my characters and focus on them for a while to create a more in-depth story behind them.
But alas, I don't expect anyone to take it seriously and to instead see where Sujin gets a lot of her good looks from instead, which is fine too, I guess. Again, don't expect to see lots of her father or family members much in artwork due to them being minor characters.
But, you may also appreciate the fact that I was able to write some simplified Chinese too? (Courtesy of Google Translate, of course)
