Already running an hour late, the California Zephyr rolls through Berwyn, Illinois roughly twenty minutes after departing Chicago's Union Station for San Francisco. The westbound Southwest Chief had preceded it by about a half hour. The eastbound California Zephyr was running 5 hours late that day!

Whether it be the original CB&Q/D&RGW/WP incarnation or the Amtrak version, the California Zephyr has always been dear to me. My aunt was a stewardess on the original CZ from 1964 until it was termianted (March 20th, 1970). They were called Zephyrettes in those days. When Amtrak revived it in 1983, she was invited to be hostess of the first trip. She accepted.
