The son of Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus, Jacen was born months after his father's death. His early childhood was spent moving from base to base as his mother was busy fighting in the rebellion. He was raised with the help of Hera's longtime shipmate, Garazeb Orrelios, a lasat warrior who Jacen came to admire greatly. When Jacen was five, the force ghost of his father appeared to him for the first time. The encounter frightened the boy, despite the reassurances of his mother. Kanan began to appear to his son more often once Jacen overcame this fear.

When Jacen was seven, he finally met Ezra Bridger, who he had heard stories about from his mother. Jacen immediately bonded with Ezra, who became a regular presence in his life.

Jacen had wanted to be a pilot for all of his life, so it was only natural that he join the New Republic's Starfighter Corps. His career started off promising, and he quickly earned the rank of lieutenant. However, Jacen's life changed after Ezra's Jedi Order was wiped out by the Knights of Ren. In the fighting, Jacen's 'Uncle Zeb' was killed. In honor of the fallen lasat, Jacen took his bo-rifle as his own and became quite skilled with the weapon.

Now motivated by revenge, Jacen eagerly followed Ezra into the world of bounty hunting. He would later earn the nickname 'One-Eye Jacen' after losing his left eye during a fight. He would keep his Republic flight suit, but his right arm would now be covered in pieces of armor once worn by his father.

With his mother now joining the Resistance, and Ezra once again committed to the Jedi way, Jacen is uncertain of his future. It remains to be seen what path he chooses.
