- Chapter 6
The Words of a Dying Hero
The words uttered by the grand king of Serenia… words like no other spoken by one of this race. The words meant simply “To my loved ones, I wish peace.” In literal translation it comes out “My Love, Peace” but over the years the translation became strewn and made easier for feeble minds to understand. One may ask how the tradition of saying these dreaded words before death was started among the Serenian race. It is simple really, for it happened on the night of which the Nightmare began…
The monster Nightmare had bested the last king. The sons of the king were in danger for their father was a fresh corpse, and the nurse holding care for them was no match for nightmare for she knew no magic of any kind. One final spell cast by Arianna would protect the boys to a fault. “Serenian Barrier Art – Mother’s Love.” Arianna needed to muster the last of her strength to use this holy shield formed from her love alone. The love she held for her sons and her husband whom she was hopeful was still alive and fighting for her life and that of the children. Celles looked to Arianna and said “You really love them don’t you? This barrier proves that, for it is monstrously powerful.” Arianna could do nothing but smile and say “when you grow old, and have children of your own, you will understand” Celles wondered if she would make it through this conflict and worried that she may not, as her face clearly showed to Arianna. The expression on her face concerned Arianna and made her comfort Celles to the best of her ability. Alas, it was to no avail, for Arianna was running low on energy and running even lower on time. Her body started to become weak and her mind started to fade, while her expression started to turn to one of exhaustion and inner turmoil. Celles noticed this and attempted to keep Arianna conscious for fear of losing her to the endless sleep. This struggle lasted for an hour and a half until finally Arianna’s body simply could no longer hold on and her mind could only muster up one thing to say.
“Meselia… Reatot… Barcha…”
With that said… Arianna was gone, her heart beat absent, and her breath as still as the stone that now rests where she lies in eternal slumber. Nightmare… a being that took the life of the king, and by degree, the life of the queen. The monster was headed back to the hospital to kill the children and consume the fear of all around him as they witnessed the death of children. When he arrived he felt the presence of the barrier, the shield of a mother’s love undying, stopping his advance into the hospital. The beast scoffs at what he calls “A feeble attempt” and launches a flurry of black lightning at the wall between him and his goal. The once strong barrier, the once formidable shield of love, shattered like glass at the ends of the lightning he struck it with. With this Nightmare understood his advantage and proceeded into the room where the children lay, protected only by Celles holding a blade she found on a doctor’s table. A small blade used by the doctors to cut open the sternum, using magic. Surely this will protect them she thought, as she shook in place holding the knife out at Nightmare and attempting not to run. Celles promised she would protect these children and she was bound and determined to do so. Nothing would make her run away and Nightmare noticed this, and capitalized on it for he saw her greatest fear at this moment was failing to protect the boys. Nightmare slyly slithered past Celles with ease and attack the children with his black bone-like claw. Celles didn’t have enough time to react and couldn’t stop the monster from attacking them. However, in that moment, something miraculous happened that would change the course of the lives of these children at fate’s fingertips. The winged boy, Dartician, opened his eyes quickly and a burst of unstable energy launched Nightmare and Celles back against parts of the wall behind them that still stood. As Nightmare recovered from this and headed towards the boys slowly he realized the in the blast the nurse, who had defended the boys’ lives had been killed, for her fragile body was not able to withstand the blast followed by hitting a wall at that speed. With that, Nightmare chuckled and said “well I guess her fear was realized. A job well done.” The sick mind of the beast then remembered his true purpose for being where he was and slowly approached the infants once again. The winged boy’s eyes were shut once more and he seemed to be asleep again. Nightmare was injured by the blast but assumed that since the winged boy slept he was safe, however being not safe at all. Little did the beast know that the boy with the tail had power equal to that of the winged boy and was capable of the same thing. This did not occur to Nightmare as he advanced. The monster had his claw ready to strike, yet he stumbled. He realized that he didn’t have the strength to attack the boys successfully and thought to himself was all this a waste? Did I fail to complete my perfect form? Am I really going to die here because I can’t obtain the power I need? Nightmare contemplated this for some time before he tried moving again. The same result ensued and Nightmare stumbled once again and this time fell to the floor, and found himself incapable of moving from his embarrassing position. Nightmare had truly failed himself because of a man who knew how to capitalize on Nightmares wasting of power, and a child who unknowingly activated the powers that lay deep in his body.
This was it. The end of the once mighty beast known the whole world round as Nightmare, the Beast of True Fear. A title befitting of his innate ability to bring to life a person’s worst nightmare and kill them with their own greatest fear. This day was one that brought much darkness and yet ended with such light, for in this day not only did the greatest hero of the Serenian race die, so did the monster that slew him. All would remember this day for it was a day where peace could finally begin to return to Xanderclese, and the healing of the planet could begin anew. What of the boys? What would they do with no father to raise them, and no mother to nurture them? They would surely die with no one around to care for them until they could care for themselves. Fate had a different plan in mind, for one of the doctor’s had survived the onslaught from nightmare by hiding in a closet that was near the entrance to the room the boys were in. This was no ordinary doctor though, for he was a doctor that practiced magic that let him sense the energy levels, heartbeat, breathing rate, and metabolic rate of living things around him. He stepped out of the closet once he felt Nightmare’s energy level cease to exist. His name was Betlam Tembra, and he was a friend of the family Utopia. He walked in and found a carriage to put the children into. His face was filled with grief and remorse for his great lifelong friend’s death. He could sense the death of Hope and knew the boys needed a home, so he took them in and gave them a home and a father figure for 12 years. For 6 years after that he acted as a mentor and slowly revealed stories of their father and mother to them, ultimately leading to the story of their death. On the day of their 18th birthday – the day the barbarians attacked – Betlam told them the story of the day their parents sacrificed themselves to protect the twins’ lives. Over the next few years Dart would study and develop a rather natural proficiency in his summoning and scythe wielding abilities. The years spent were filled with trial and tribulation, but also great reward for his efforts, not only in mastering his craft but making many friends along the way. For once in his life after Xandel was murdered Dartician finally found happiness while traveling in the side show with Luna and Leviar.
It seemed impossible to ruin the life of the proud wayward prince of the Serenian Hold and it nearly was. The only problem was that trouble followed Dart everywhere he went, though it usually never caused too large of a commotion. The reintroduction of his thought-to-be dead brother caused a ripple in his almost intoxicating bliss in life. The near death experience caused by Nightmare nearly broke his spirit, but that was quickly rescued by the knowledge that Leviar saved him. The words of a fallen hero ring true through the halls of the royal Serenian Family of Utopia. “Meselia Reatot Barcha… ‘To my loved ones, I wish peace’ are words I hope to never need to hear again.”
