In the summer of 1878, on the high plains along the border of Kansas and Oklahoma, something was preying on the cattle and sheep. After railroad worker Zhang Wei went missing, his wife Pangfua insisted he was eaten by a dragon.

Sheriff Carson Cody organized a hunting party to kill the beast, the “dragon posse” led by expert Choctaw tracker Korrakshunnubbee (aka Karl Rivers). After several days they discovered the creature outside its lair.

According to the account of Francis “Rip” Stullins, it “Looked like some kinda prairie gator.” Several men affirmed it could run on two legs as easily as on all four. The dragon killed one cowboy and two horses before it was brought down. The hide and skull were displayed for several years in the Bold Fortune Saloon of Cold Creek, both presumably destroyed when the town suffered a devastating fire in 1892.
