Description The main problem with the C-141 was its tendency to run out of cargo space before it reached its maximum takeoff weight. To rectify the problem, in tle late 70s Lockheed stretched all but two of the surviving USAF fleet by 7.11 metres and added a refuelling receptacle above the cockpit. This upgraded aircraft was designated the C-141B.
It was planned to replace the Starlifter with the C-17 Globemaster III, which with its wider fuselage could carry modern armoured fighting vehicles that wouldn't go into the C-141's narrow cargo hold. Due to delays in the C-17 programme, some of the C-141B's were modified to C-standard with a major avionics upgrade.

I've flown on a bunch of them. My longest trip was from Diego Garcia to Norfolk, VA.
